Nakajima Suisan : Affordable Fish Restaurant at Takashimaya

Nakajima Suisan Grilled Fish restaurant at Takashimaya is one of the top outlets at the Taka food cluster in basement 2 level of Ngee Ann City. The reasonably priced fish meals attract long queues. Best to go during off peak periods.

There are many food outlets in Takashimaya basement 2. At one end is the food court. Right in the other end is an area where there is a cluster of food outlets. Nakajima Suisan Grilled Fish is usually the most crowded and have queues at mealtimes.

Do note the queuing instructions. The restaurant has its own tables in the cordoned off area. A large menu is available for browsing while customers are in the queue. The above picture was taken at a peak hour. We timed out visit at around 11+am on a weekday, well before the lunch crowded. There was no queue. We ordered and paid at the cashier and were ushered to one of the tables.

There is an option of ordering the fish items a la carte or as a set meal. Most people (including us) will choose the latter which costs $2 more and includes rice, salad and miso soup. For this visit we selected the Hikari (Pacific Ocean perch) set ($20.50) and a Salmon Teriyaki Set ($13.50).

Our Set Meals at Takashimaya Basement

We were pleasantly surprised by the large size of the Hikari fish. It was split through the middle and grilled. There was plenty of meat on this fish. Since it was a whole fish. one has to navigate the bones on the fish. Those who prefer boneless fillets can select the larger fishes like salmon or cod.

The Salmon Teriyaki Set ($13.50) was more affordable but the fish quantity was smaller. But since it was boneless, it was perfect for those wishing to avoid the hassle of fish bones. Tea was served at the restaurant without charge. We thought that both dishes were good value for money for a nutritious meal in the heart of Orchard Road.
