Cheval Chibao (赤宝) Chinese restaurant @ Bukit Merah Sports Lifestyle Centre is an affordable place to eat in the Redhill / Henderson area. They also run a Western restaurant Cheval Cafe and Bistro in the same complex.

Bukit Merah swimming complex is an unlikely place to go for a Chinese restaurant. But we ended up there for lunch recently. We noticed the very unusual name of Cheval Chibao when we browsed the list of Chinese restaurants on the CHOPE website. Intrigued by the name and location, we took a trip down to the Redhill area to check it out.
Restaurant at Bukit Merah Sports Lifestyle Centre

The Bukit Merah Sports Lifestyle Centre is located near the junction of Bukit Merah Central road and Henderson Road. There are a few parking lots there but there are all reserved. The nearest public parking options are at the building across the road and the multi-storey carpark at the Bukit Merah bus interchange, a short 5 minute walk away.
CHEVAL Cafe Bar Bistro

Rising among the various swimming pools is a circular building with a large signboard of CHEVAL Cafe Bar Bistro. This large domed area houses the Western restaurant and pub. From the well stocked bar, it looks like the kind of place that comes alive at night.

A weekday 3 course set lunch ($18++) menu was offered when we were there.

Cheval Chibao 赤宝Chinese Restaurant
On the left side of the Cheval Bistro is the Cheval Chibao Chinese restaurant which is air-conditioned. We were there for lunch on a weekday and the restaurant was almost full. Most of them dressed like they were having their lunch break from the nearby offices. The atmosphere of the restaurant was simple and pleasant.

Cheval Chibao Menu
Here are some sample pictures of the Cheval Chibao menu. A full menu can be viewed on line, the link is provided at the end of this post below. We had a simple lunch of three dishes and rice : HK style steamed snapper fillet ($12.80), Signature Champagne Pork Ribs ($15.80), Trio Egg Spinach in Broth ($12.80) and rice ($1.20 each).

Our Simple Lunch at Bukit Merah
Here are pictures of our lunch. All the dishes were nicely prepared. Nothing fancy or elaborate but very reasonable considering the price. We should have liked the signature pork ribs to have more meat and be softer. Other than that we were happy with our lunch

Our lunch for 2 pax of fish, meat and vegetables cost us less than $50. For a pleasant Chinese restaurant with a peaceful environment, we thought it was a place we would visit again to try their other dishes.
