Nantsuttei is one of those hidden shops in the upper levels of Orchard Central. It will rank among the best ramen restaurants in Singapore and thrives despite its obscure location.
Nantsuttei at Orchard Central
Nantsuttei has several outlets in Japan and in Bangkok.
Nantsuttei Singapore is on level 7 of Orchard Central. It is a place with low footfall. For the few people who may saunter into that area of Orchard Central the thing that will catch their attention may be the signage that announced – “5 Years Ramen Champion Nantsuttei”. The signage was effective as we ended up having lunch at Nantsuttei even though we did not plan to.
The restaurant is fairly compact. It looks like a typical casual dining Japanese restaurant. The decor is unpretentious – functional. There are wooden furniture and counter seating, and you can see the chefs at work.
Its claim to fame is “Ma-yu,” black roasted garlic oil made with a secret recipe. While waiting for your food at this Japanese ramen store, you can take a lesson on how to eat their special Ma-yu ramen.
Nantsuttei Ramen
Nantsuttei Ramen at Orchard Central has a special lunch promotion. When you order any of their ramen, you top up just $1 to enjoy a side dish and a drink.
We ordered the Nantsuttei Tonkatsu Ramen ($11.90) and Curry Men ($14.90). We took advantage of the $1 top up promotion and opted for tea and the side dishes of yaki-gyoza and sui-gyoza.
The Nantsuttei Tonkatsu Ramen was very good. The tonkotsu (pork bone) broth was rich and creamy. The black garlic oil gave the soup an extra kick and made it really special. The generously sized tender charshu was tasty with a combination of smokiness, sweetness and savouriness. There were lots of other ingredients including bean sprouts and seaweeds. There was a harmony of flavours. It was a delicious bowl of ramen that was enjoyable.
The Curry Men was Nantsuttei’s basic ramen topped by ground meat flavoured with spicy curry. It was not the typical sweet Japanese curry. The curry was really quite spicy
The gyozas, both versions, were very nice. Definitely good value to pay the $1 top up for the gyozas if you are there during lunch time.
Delicious ramen at reasonable prices
Nantsuttei Ramen Champion at Orchard Central is a very good ramen restaurant. It is easy to see why Nantsuttei has been crowned “New Tokyo Ramen Champion” and won many other ramen awards. It is a great place to go for delicious ramen at very reasonable prices.
