Grey Area Coffee Roasters is simply about enjoying a very good cup of barista brewed coffee in a welcoming, understated space. They offer only a few baked items, which are good too.
Grey Area Coffee Roasters @ Kg Bahru
There are many eateries and cafes along Kampong Bahru Road. Grey Area Coffee Roasters is a new cafe that opened in the earlier part of 2022. It occupies one of the quaint small shophouses and does nothing to attract attention to itself. From a distance, you will probably not be able to tell that it is a cafe.
It has a minimalist interior design with shades of grey and simple rustic furniture. There are a few bar counter seats. Most of the other seats are benches and stools lined against the walls of the very compact space. You don’t see any table for dining as you are not expected to be eating any substantial food there. It is essentially a spot for coffee, and some snacks to go with your cuppa.
Grey Area Coffee Menu
Grey Area Coffee Roasters has a very focused menu – just espresso coffee, chocolate and yuzu tea plus a selection of single origin filter coffee for the serious coffee aficionados.
There is no food menu. There are, however, cookies, brownies and banana bread on the display counter.
We visited Grey Area at Kampong Bahru and had a black coffee ($4.50) and a white coffee ($5) with a piece of banana bread ($4) and a piece of the original chocolate cookie ($3.50).
Black & White Coffee
The espresso coffee was meticulously brewed by the friendly barista. It took a while to get our coffee but it was worth the wait. The coffee was very good – rich, clean tasting without too much acidity. The white coffee was smooth and creamy.
Grey Area roasts its own coffee beans and has both espresso & filter beans. Packets of coffee beans are available for purchase to brew your own coffee at home.
Cookies & Banana Bread
We wanted something to eat but there were only housemade sea salt brownies, banana bread and a variety of chocolate cookies available. We opted for the original chocolate cookie and banana bread and had no regret.
The large piece of chocolate cookie did not look very appealing but it was surprisingly yummy. It had a buttery crust and was slightly chewy with a soft, gooey and sweet, but not too sweet, centre. We liked the texture and the taste.
The banana bread was also nice – moist and flavourful – but did not impress us as much as the cookie.
Specialty Coffee Shop
Grey Area Coffee Roasters at Kampong Bahru is a niche specialty coffee shop. It does not offer much – just very good coffee, and some munchies, in a tranquil space. It should be a great pitstop for any serious coffee drinker.
