Humble Origins Coffee Roasters – from Myanmar to Joo Chiat

Humble Origins Coffee Roasters is another new cafe in Joo Chiat. The specialty coffee shop offers coffee from smallholder producers in Myanmar, a country that has been growing coffee since 1885.

Coffee from Myanmar

The team behind EASY Specialty Coffee & Gentleman Coffee Roasters, both of Myanmar, brings Humble Origins Coffee Roasters to Singapore. According to the Myanmar Coffee Association, British missionaries introduced the coffee plant to Burma (now Myanmar) in 1885. There was no large scale commercial production and the coffee trade in Myanmar went into hibernation when the British colonial rule ended in 1948. In recent years agricultural growth was encouraged by the government and high grade coffee beans have been grown and exported. Myanmar coffee is almost exclusively Arabica. Grown in Shan State, Mandalay Region, Kayin State, and Chin State, expensive single origin and high-quality organic coffee are exported to the United States, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.

Humble Origins Coffee Roasters import beans from smallholder producers in Shan State, such as from Ga Naing Yar Village in Ywangan with flavour notes of Peach, Marigold & Honey Nectar; and Black Honey processed coffee with tasting notes of Sweet Cherries & Roses from Amayar Coffee Ywangan.

The new cafe is an interesting addition to the vibrant cafe scene in Joo Chiat. It is not really an additional cafe in the neighbourhood because Humble Origins Coffee Roasters took over the premises vacated by Homeground Coffee Roasters (who have moved to Teo Hong Road). It is located right next to another cafe – Nimbus (which is the rebranded C Cafe).

New Humble Origins Cafe in Joo Chiat

Humble Origins cafe has a modern Scandinavian chic interior – with clean lines and minimalist aesthetics. There are a few tables in the front portion of the narrow shop space, a few bar seats at the barista counter, and a few more tables in the small rear portion.

Menu Humble Origins Coffee

The minimalist approach of Humble Origins Coffee extends to the menu. It essentially offers coffee, cold-pressed juice and four food items. It is noteworthy that the menu prices are all-inclusive, that is, no service charge and not GST would be added.

Below are pictures of the menu when I visited the new cafe in mid September 2022.

Roast Beef Croissant & Coffee

I went to Humble Origins Coffee Roasters in Joo Chiat for lunch and the only substantive dish was the Roast Beef Ribeye Croissant with Argula Salad ($29). There was no decision to be made. So I ordered the Roast Beef Croissant and a Long Black ($5). The wait for the food was rather short – less than 15 minutes. Water was served first and coffee came after a few minutes.

The Roast Beef Ribeye Croissant with Argula Salad was nicely plated and was a rather substantial dish. The slices of well-marbled, boneless cut of beef were juicy and tender. The cheese and anchovy dressing added subtle flavours and the carmelised onions gave the sandwich a nice sweetness. It was delicious but perhaps a tad expensive for a sandwich. However, think of it as a roast beef dish with a nice buttery croissant and the price would seem reasonable.

The coffee was good. It was aromatic with mild chocolatey flavours and left a citrusy aftertaste

Humble Origins Coffee Roasters in Joo Chiat is a pleasant spot to enjoy coffee brewed from quality beans from Myanmar and some interesting comfort food. The unpretentious cafe with a modest name may have a quiet beginning. There are however indications that it may be destined for greater heights.
