Mei Ling Market Beef Noodles stall Lao Jie Fang 老街坊 serves some of the best braised beef brisket noodles in Singapore. Together with Xin Lu Teochew fishball noodles, they make a great combination for a quick hawker centre lunch in the Queenstown area.
Mei Ling Market and Food Centre
The Mei Ling Market and Food Centre is not very big, but has one of the nicest food centre layouts in Singapore. Being on the second level, it enjoys the brightness of natural sunlight and a constant cool breeze. The tables are well spread out and it is a nice hawker centre to have lunch, especially on weekdays when the human traffic is relatively light. Mei Ling Market Beef Noodles Lao Jie Fang and Xin Lu Fishball Noodles are the two stalls we are writing about today. We will provide more information on other food options in future posts.
Lao Jie Fang – The Neatest Hawker Stall
Lao Jie Fang is one of our favourites at Mei Ling Market not only because of the food. It is also one of the neatest Singapore hawker stalls we have seen. Everything looks clean and tidy. Utensils and other equipment are left to a minimum and there is little clutter. Perhaps even Ms Kondo will be impressed.
Mei Ling Market Beef Noodles
The Lao Jie Fang menu is as neat and minimalist as the stall. Only three items are up on the menu display – beef brisket (with or without tendon), pork ribs and pork trotter noodles. The one we always go for is the braised beef and tendon noodles.
This is the wonderful Mei Ling Market beef noodles. The beef parts had been cooked till very soft. Only some chewiness remains in the tendon to give that enjoyable texture. The deep-flavours of the gravy had been infused. Together with the noodles that were cooked just right, this was a very satisfying beef noodle combination.

Xin Lu Teochew Fishball Noodles 新路
Xin Lu Teo Chew Fishball Noodle, sometimes referred to as Margaret Drive fishball noodles, is one of the most popular stalls in Mei Ling. The star attraction here are the handmade fishballs. They can be purchased raw ($4.50 for ten) to be cooked at home. These are especially popular during Chinese New Year when many people order in advance the fishballs for steamboat dinners at home.
The two star items here are the dry mee pok noodles or the kway teow soup. The price of the noodles is $4.50, which is an increase from the time of our last post a few years ago.
Here is a picture of our dry mee pok with fishball soup. Other than the price, everything else remained roughly the same – five ‘bouncy’ fishballs and a bowl of dry mee pok with a good measure of sauces and pork lard. Compared to the one from our last post, the portion of noodles seem to have increased.
The Mei Ling Market Beef Noodles from Lao Jie Fang and the Xin Lu fishball noodles made a good combination. Another reason to visit is that Mei Ling is not one of those superstar hawker centres where there are big crowds and good stalls see crazy long queues.

I second the Lao Jie Fang recommendation. I ate there 3 times (2023). The uncle in the photo remembered me when I came back.
