Mizume Japanese Dining Concept is a cosy omakase and sushi restaurant on the ground floor of Hotel NuVe Elements at Hong Kong Street. With a short lunch menu to choose from, we decided to try the $128++ omakase menu and hope the auspicious number works for the New Year!
Mizume Japanese Dining Concept Restaurant
The entrance to the Mizume Japanese restaurant is simple and zen. Once inside, there is a U-shaped counter, on which the dining takes place. All the cooking takes place behind the counter. Which is nice to have, for diners who like to watch the cooking.
The first place that came to mind as we entered was Naniwa Kappo Kigawa, a Michelin Star kappo-style restaurant in Osaka. Less formal than a kaiseki restaurant, but more serious than an isakaya. This was indeed the atmosphere we experienced at Mizume Japanese restaurant.
Mizume Lunch Menu
This is a picture of a portion of the Mizume Japanese Dining. In addition to these omakase and sushi options there are a few more singe dish lunch items, but I believe these fixed course meals offer a better glimpse of what Mizume has to offer. At dinner time, the menu gets more sophisticated and expensive. There are three dinner set menus starting from $188++.
Appetisers and Sashimi
This being an omakase restaurant, the type of food is likely to change so I shall not bore you with too much details of what we ate that day.
The two kinds of appetisers served were shirako (the milt of cod dish) and cooked scallops. Both were light and suitable as appetisers.
The sashimi dish was made up of a prawn and several slices of assorted fish, a couple of which had been seared with a blow torch. The quality of the raw food is above average in our opinion but lacks the depth of flavours and richness of those in a top notch sushi restaurant.
Grilled Dish and Tempura
The cooked food segment of our lunch was our favourite part. The grilled yellowtail in fact was exceptionally fresh and cooked till perfection. This, we think can rival those of any Japanese restaurant.
We also enjoyed the tempura – especially the prawn and sweet potato. If they offer a cooked food only menu, we would love to try it.
Mizume Sushi
It is always nice to sit at the counter and have the sushi served one by one. The selection offered was good as differed types of fish were served, and with some differences in presentation. Our thoughts on the sushi segment are the same as indicated above for the sashimi. We enjoyed this segment generally, but perhaps the least for the sea urchin which lacked the sweetness that we were anticipating.
Chef’s Rice Bowl, Soup and Dessert
Our lunch ended with the chef’s rice bowl, soup and dessert. The rice was topped with pieces of beef that was very fatty. Soup was a generous bowl of assorted ingredients.
Dessert was a scoop of sorbet and a piece of chewy mochi wrapped in a bamboo leaf. It was an affordable omakase lunch at a rather new Mizume Japanese restaurant (they opened in 2020 I believe). There was quite a lot of food for $128++. Service was attentive and welcoming.
