New Khao Hom Thai Restaurant
Locals in the know like to go to Katong Square because it is relatively quiet and has convenient parking facilities. The opening of the new Thai restaurant, Khao Hom by Rung Mama, may mean that Katong Square will get busier during meal times.
The new Thai restaurant in Katong Square is the 2nd outlet of the popular restaurant that has been serving authentic Thai food in Djitsun Mall in Ang Mo Kio Central. The new Katong outlet is located on the ground level of Katong Square, taking over the premises previously occupied by Goldleaf Restaurant (金葉). The name and the decor announced clearly that it is a Thai restaurant. Thai motifs are prominent throughout the spacious dining space.

Lunch at Khao Hom Katong
We visited Khao Hom Katong on a weekday recently. Surprisingly, it was rather busy during lunchtime. Seldom had we seen so many people in Katong Square on a regular weekday around that time.
Wanting a quick lunch we ordered simple one dish meals – Thai Sausage Fried Rice with Moo Ping and Pineapple Fried Rice with Egg, both came with a beverage of choice as part of the lunch set ($11 per set). We also ordered a la carte Pad Thai ($9) and Mango Sticky Rice ($8).
The Thai Sausage Fried Rice with Moo Ping was the favourite dish of the day, mainly because we enjoyed the sausages known as sai kok, which had rich sweet savoury flavours with a distinctive Thai taste and aroma. The moo ping, or grilled pork, was well-marinated and very tasty. The meat was tender and juicy. We wish we had more.
The pineapple fried rice and pad Thai were staples that met expectations. We liked the generous amount of pork floss that topped the pineapple fried rice. You can customise the level of spiciness of the pad Thai to suit your taste.
The Mango with Sticky Rice was a nice way to round up a simple lunch. The mango was sweet and the rich coconut cream added a different layer of flavour to the dessert.
