Le Matin Patisserie at Ion Orchard is helmed by a former pastry sous chef of Noma restaurant which once held the title of the best restaurant in the world. Chef Mohamed Al-Matin is back in Singapore to share his passion for fine dining and patisserie through Le Matin Patisserie.
It is not uncommon to see queues to get into Le Matin Patisserie at Ion Orchard, particularly at brunch or lunch time. The new patisserie cafe is located at level B2. It is an attractive place with a narrow passageway separating the patisserie display area and the cafe seating area. These pictures below were taken during visit at an off-peak time around 7 pm.
According to its website, “Le Matin, or “the morning” in French is a French-inspired patisserie with an
ever-evolving menu of unique pastries, expertly-crafted from exciting ingredients sourced from the world over.”
Le Matin Patisserie Menu
There are currently 3 menus in the Le Matin Patisserie. The ALL DAY menu contains small patisserie items like cakes, tarts and pastries (both sweet and savoury). BRUNCH menu is served from 1100 – 1430 Wed to Sun. This contains more substantial items such as the Wagyu Brioche Feuilletée ($48) and Seafood Pot Pie ($25). DESSERT menu is available on Wed to Sun at 1800 – 2100. Here are pictures of some portions of the menu. A full set of the menus are available on the website, the link of which is provided at the end of this post.
We were there around 7 pm, the dessert menu was available and the all day items were on display. We decided to skip desserts and focus on trying some of the items that were on display.
What We Ate at Le Matin Ion
Pistacho Escargot ($8)
This pastry is a sweet one. Do not confuse this with the Escargot Escargot which is a savoury version. The “escargot” refers to the spiral snail shape of this type of pastry. The Le Matin pistachio escargot was packed with lots of nuts and dried fruits. It seemed like a high-end style of Danish pastry which will taste good with a strong cup of black coffee.
Mushroom Quiche ($12)
This is a quiche with a heap of mushrooms on top of it. The quiche part was a smooth eggy component. The heap of earthy mushroom gave it a good balance of flavours. This was an unusual type of quiche and was our second favourite item of the day.
Lamb & Red Wine Pie ($14)
The lamb pie was a plain looking flaky puff pastry which contained some 8-hour braised lamb stew. The lamb content was robust yet clean tasting. This must be one of the most memorable meat pies we have eaten for a while. It was our favourite of the day. But beware, this pie is heavy and oily. One pie would be sufficient for lunch on a day I am not so hungry.
Escargot Escargot ($13)
This is an escargot pastry that has a topping of escargot flavours. It looked like a Danish pastry with a topping of minced escargot meat. An interesting dish with a witty name. We would have liked it better if the presence of the snails was more pronounced.
Overall experience at Le Matin Patisserie Cafe ION Orchard
Without having tried the brunch and dessert components of the Le Matin menu, it is premature to come to any conclusions about the new Le Matin Patisserie Cafe ION Orchard. However, it was a refreshing experience to try the unusual flavours of pies and other pastries. This cafe is a good addition to the other restaurants at Ion Orchard.
