Kings Cart Joo Chiat is the place to go if you are tired of the usual espresso, cappuccino and pour-over coffees. How about Sng Buey coffee, Salted Caramel and Coconut Affogato for a change?
Kings Cart Coffee Factory Joo Chiat
It has been years since we visited Kings Cart Joo Chiat when they first opened in 2020. It still looks the same from afar but there are changes to the interior. The coffee roasting machine seems to have grown up. It is now on full display at the front of the cafe making it look more like a Coffee Factory.
The use of a coffee portafilter and tamper as door handles is such a good idea for a coffee centric cafe. These have been there since the beginning.
The interior design is now more matured and sophisticated. The espresso machine also looks bigger and more high tech. Cakes and pastries are on display at the counter.
Interesting Coffee in Joo Chiat
Many cafes have popped in Singapore in recent times. Some have introduced different types of coffee beans. More exotic ones from rare single origins. Different type of roasts, but the range of coffee offered has remained roughly the same.
As our visit was purely a coffee stop this time we will only show you pictures of the coffee menu. A full menu including the cafe food menu) is available online (see link at the end of this post). At the Kings Cart Joo Chiat cafe, you can’t accuse them of being boring. The menu includes coffee such as Yuen Yang, Salted Caramel and Coconut Affogato.
Of course those who wish to stick to the tried and tested types of coffee can also find them here.
Yuen Yang Coffee
Yuen yang coffee is a drink made by mixing tea with coffee. It is said to have originated in Hong Kong. This is a drink we associate with char chaarn tangs, not hip cafes. At Kings Cart Joo Chiat, it is a glass of milk tea served with espresso coffee on the side. You can adjust the ratio of tea to coffee to your liking. Our preference? Emptying the whole portion of coffee into the tea yielded the best results.
Coconut Ice Latte ($10)
The usual espresso is mixed with gula melaka and creamy coconut cream to create a latte that has a rich flavour. Small bits of toasted coconut flakes adds texture and more ‘coconutiness’ to the drink. Very unusual and could even pass as a dessert.
Kings Cart Joo Chiat Coconut Affogato
Our favourite coffee item at Kings Cart Joo Chiat was the coconut affogato ($7.50). Like the usual affogato, a scoop of ice-cream is served, to be drenched with espresso coffee. At this Joo Chiat cafe, it was a large scoop of coconut ice cream topped with toasted coconut flakes. Priced at $7.50, it was not only delicious but also good value for money.
Coffee Ah Bo Ling
“Tang Yuan” are rice balls eaten during some Chinese festivals. Also known as ‘ah bo ling’ locally, they symbolise harmony and togetherness. At Kings Cart Joo Chiat, they serve ah bo ling with a shot of espresso. A Singapore version of affogato perhaps. The glutinous black seasame rice balls taste surprising well with strong black coffee. This took the award of most interesting coffee of the day. It also costs $7.50 which we think is also good value for money – a dessert with top notch coffee at this price.
