Newton Old Signboard 25 is a Hokkien mee and char kway teow stall at the Newton Food Centre. The HKM and CKT prices start from $6/$9/$11 for S/M/L sizes. We bought a $9 CKT takeaway.
Newton Food Centre at Lunch Time
It has been a long time since we visited Newton Circus hawker centre. It had been recently refurbished. From some angles Newton FC looks like a restaurant in a seaside resort. The stalls have a newer, brighter look than before. Each stall has clear pictures of the food they serve. The floor and tables look clean and big giant fans provide air circulation. A previous visit to Newton Food Centre at weekday lunch time saw very few stalls open and a very quiet place. This time the crowds were bigger and the carpark was 2/3 full. A good number of stalls were open. Those that were closed in the day were mainly the seafood stalls.
The stretch of stalls nearest the carpark were having the most of the business. Newton Old Signboard 25 is one of the stalls along this stretch. Most of the sheltered tables along this stretch were occupied. Of course the open air tables that are exposed to the noon day sun were totally empty.
Newton Old Signboard 25
Newton Old Signboard 25 has a Google review score of 3.7. It looks like a well run place with a tidy appearance and an organised order system. The use of buzzers allow customers to wait at their tables or to buy other things instead of standing in queue. They have a few versions of Hokkien mee – regular and with oyster or lala clams. We decided to try the fried kway teow.
Newton Circus Fried Kway Teow
This is picture of our takeaway New Old Signboard 23 CKT. This “medium” portion filled up about 2/3 of the plastic container. Dark in colour and rather dry it, bits of vegetables, fish cake and lap cheong (Chinese sausage) slices were visible at the top. It also has some cockles but too few to make an impression.
This is what the Newton char kway teow looks like when transferred to a plate. The medium size is adequate for one person. Taste was ok, but not outstanding. The position of Outram Road char kway teow as our favourite CKT in Singapore was not threatened. We thought that $9 was rather expensive. But with prices of everything going up these days, it seems that this is becoming the new normal.
