Butahage Hokkaido Singapore : New Suntec City Japanese Restaurant

Butahage Hokkaido Singapore has its new outlet in Suntec City. Butadon or pork donburi (slices of pork served on rice) is its specialty. New restaurants in Singapore always bring about excitement and curiosity. Like many, we were at Suntec soon after its opening on 1 August 2023.

Butadon

Behind the glass panels of the kitchen, we can see the butadon being prepared at the new Butahage Singapore store. Slices of pork, coated with their proprietary butadon sauce, are grilled before being placed on bowls of rice. The sweetish sauce (somewhat similar to that used on unagi) which has been cooked for hours, is apparently the thing that makes the butadon distinctive.

Butahage Hokkaido Singapore Suntec City

The new Suntec City restaurant is located on the ground floor of Tower 3, near the beef bowl restaurant Sukiya. Where is Suntec Tower 3? That is the area near where the old Carrefour supermarket used to be. In other words – at the opposite end of Suntec City from the Convention Hall.

The new Butahage Suntec City outside looks attractive but because it is a small enclosed space with hard surfaces, the acoustics made us quite uncomfortable. If you have a choice pick a seat near the entrance.

Butahage Hokkaido Singapore Menu

Here are some sample screenshots of the Butahage Singapore online menu. The type of food available is mainly rice bowls. In addition to butadon, there are tendon (rice topped with tempura) and seafood don. We decided on the flagship item – Obihiro Meibutsu Japanese pork loin don ($19.80 for regular) and a Premium Tendon ($14.80).

Premium Tendon

The premium tendon was not much different from that of a typical Japanese restaurant. It came with three prawns and a few other items of seafood and vegetables. The tempura pieces were initially very dry with very little sauce on them. At our request, additional sauce was provided.

Obihiro Meibutsu Japanese Pork Loin Don

We had looked forward to this dish as the Hokkaido is a place known for its natural resources including their farm produce. The Japanese pork loin butadon is priced above the one that is made with regular pork loin.

There was a slight pork flavour in the meat. But not too strong to be offensive. The sauce was pretty good and coated the pork with a pleasant sweet and savoury flavour. There was a mix of lean meat and mixed fatty meat. It was a nice bowl of pork with rice but did not have a “wow” factor that we had anticipated.
