Ginza Anzu Great World is a tonkatsu restaurant from Kyushu Japan. It is described as “a farm-to-table concept eatery”. Dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients mainly imported from Kyushu, and uses high-quality imported pork from US and Canada.
From Wisma Atria to Great World
Anzu Tonkatsu used to be located at the now defunct Japan Food Town at Wisma Atria Orchard Road Singapore. At that time it was a small restaurant with a row of counter seats and a few small tables. The wooden wall surfaces and furniture gave it a warm cosy feel. You can see pictures of it in our post. We like the new Anzu Great World tonkatsu restaurant better. It is on the ground floor of the shopping mall and is bright and spacious.
Anzu Great World Menu
Not surprisingly, most of the food items on the Anzu Great World Menu are tonkatsu items. But the katsu is offered in a number of variants. The best (and most expensive) dishes are those made with GinJo pork. These katsu sets are priced from $33 to $42 each. Here are some sample pages from the menu.
Most of the Anzu katsu sets are however more affordable and are in the $25 (+/-) range.
The most interesting item is the Anzu’s service (omakase) lunch set which costs only $18 and are limited to 20 meals per day. We tried it when they were still at Wisma Atria and you can read about it here. For this visit, we focused on pork katsu and decided on a Ginjo Pork Loin Katsu Set ($33) and Pork Loin Katsu with Grated Radish and Green Onion Set ($25)
Ginza Anzu Katsu Set Lunches
Each katsu set comes with a free-flow supply of fresh vegetable salad (most cabbage), pickles and soup (choice of miso or pork soup).
There is also a choice of white or brown rice. We selected one of each for comparison. Brown rice sounds and looks like a more healthy choice. But we prefer the Japanese white rice which has a nice fragrance and a fluffy yet chewy texture.
Anzu Ginjo Pork Loin Katsu Set
This is a picture of the Ginjo Pork Loin Katsu Set. We found the more pricey Ginjo pork to be more fatty and softer. The dish also included a serving of sesame seeds to be ground and added to the sauce. We thought that the difference between the Ginjo and the regular pork was not that great, although we like the extra taste of ground sesame seeds.
Pork Loin Katsu with Grated Radish and Green Onion Set
It was the more affordable Pork Loin Katsu with Grated Radish and Green Onion Set that won us over. The radish and green onion topping made the katsu more attractive. It also added more sweetness and texture to the pork. For those who are bored of regular tonkatsu that seems to be the same at tonkatsu restaurants in Singapore. This is one katsu specimen that is different from the others.
Overall, lunch at Ginza Anzu Great World was a pleasant experience. The ground floor restaurants were not very crowded at lunchtime on a weekday. But the car park was quite full, possibly because there are two major supermarkets in this shopping mall – Cold Storage and Meidiya.
