Today’s post is about what we ate at Urban Folks Margaret Market and The Homme Baker when we visited the newly reopened Margaret Market in Queenstown Singapore recently.

Urban Folks Margaret Market
Urban Folks was one of the more busy outlets at the market at the time of our visit on a weekday morning. Their opening hour of 9 am was an advantage. Many of the other stalls were not yet open and Singapore markets tend to attract early shoppers (even though venue is more like a food court rather than a”true” market, but we are creatures of habit). They also feature toasties and sammies on their menu. A wise move as these items pair perfectly with coffee for a nice lazy breakfast or brunch. Here is a picture of the Urban Folks menu.

We selected a Hallouminati Sammie ($15). “Sammies”, it seems, is the trendy way to refer to sandwiches these days. A quick google search yielded this definition by Collins Dictionary: “1. two or more slices of bread, usually buttered, with a filling of meat, cheese, etc”.

This Urban Folks sammie was made with grilled Halloumi cheese and a bundle of vegetables and smashed avocado. The toasted sour dough completed the sandwich. It was tasty and quite substantial – enough for as a meal for one.

Urban Folks’ coffeee at Margaret Market was also good. Both food and drink were served in disposables even though we were dining in. We are not sure about environmental concerns, but food and coffee usually taste better eaten out of proper tableware.

The Homme Baker @ Margaret Market
For dessert we had to try at least one of the cakes from another outlet at the market. The Homme Baker has a wonderful series of cakes available. You can see and order them from their website.

They have a big selection of cakes shaped like Swiss cheese. For us the most beautiful cakes on display that day were the Bunny Carrot Cake and the Be Proud & Gorgeous Chocolate Cake. But we were also drawn to their plainer Basque Burnt Cheesecakes.

Matcha Basque Burnt Cheesecake
We decided on a slice of matcha Basque Burnt Cheesecake that looked nicely rich and ‘burnt’.

Because of the beautiful display of The Homme Baker cakes, our expectations were high. We were therefore somewhat disappointed as it turned out to be quite average. Not very moist and the flavour was unremarkable. But perhaps this was not their signature items. The Homme Baker folks running the shop were nice and friendly. And a minor point- their food and drinks were served with proper tableware.

This is composite picture of what we ate at Margaret Market.
