There is a new cafe in Joo Chiat Place where you will find Pelle & Pepe Bakery and Narrative Coffee Stand. When we visited, the cafe did not seem to have a name.
New Cafe in Joo Chiat Place
The new cafe in Joo Chiat Place is located in Everitt Edge, a 5 storey condominium with retail units on the ground floor. Everitt Edge is at the junction of Joo Chiat Place and Everiit Road. The famous Ah Lim Mee Mok and Kim Choo Kueh Chang are just across the road.
The cafe on the ground level of Everitt Edge faces Everitt Road. When we visited the new cafe in early November 2023, there was no signboard or any indication of a name. The shop space had a glass facade with green frames and a glass door with a light brown frame. We could see that coffee and baked goods were being sold inside.
The shop space is long and narrow. A small front portion has beautiful floor tiles.
There are two separate counters – one for Pelle & Pepe and the other for Narrative Coffee Stand. The bakery and the coffee stand operate separately. There are two different cashiers. You place orders and pay at the appropriate counter.
The place is set up essentially for takeaways. However, there are a few seats in the common front section for dine-in customers. There is also a wall-mounted countertop, more like a narrow ledge, designed for stand-up dining.
Pelle & Pepe
Pelle & Pepe describes itself as a bakery that is “Plant-based, wholegrain forward” and “All for for nutrition & flavor, zero yeast”. They had been selling their baked goods online and via pop up stalls, and the store at Joo Chiat Place is their first physical retail location.
Many of their items are on the display counter. They include Penny Grain Sourdough Bread, Ground Cardamom Bun, Carrot Cake Loaf, Sourdough Banana Loaf, Croissant and Pain au Chocolat. There are also a few savoury items like Egg Muffin with Mushroom & Quinoa Patty. Pelle & Pepe also have specials for weekends and public holidays.
We tried Pelle & Pepe’s Black Plum Brown Butter Almond Friand ($4.50) at the cafe and the Sugar Free Pear & Blueberry Muffin ($6.50) at home. We thought the baked items were not cheap but we have to say they were both delicious and we really enjoyed them.
A friand is a small almond cake made with whisked egg whites and very little flour. Pepe’s Black Plum Friand was light and moist with a slight nutty flavor. It was like a small sponge cake with a delightful combination of flavours and textures – quite a nice treat.
The Sugar Free Pear & Blueberry Muffin looked like a regular blueberry muffin, but it had a distinct taste. The texture was lighter than the typical muffin, and it wasn’t sticky. The pear pieces inside the muffin were small and hidden, and were the main source of the subtle sweetness of the muffin. This would be our go to item when we want a guilt free sugarless treat.
Narrative Coffee Stand
Narrative Coffee Stand is a home grown specialty coffee retailer which has been operating a cafe in Bras Basah Complex. They started off as a multi-roaster but have started roasting its own beans since late 2022.
They offer both filter coffee and espresso coffee, as well as tea, juices and bottled beverages.
We had Narrative Coffee Stand’s Long Black ($5.50) and 5 oz White Coffee ($6). Both were very good. The long black had a slight acidity which contributed to a pleasant taste which was enjoyable and refreshing. The white coffee was aromatic and smooth on the palate. Its strength was nicely calibrated, providing a satisfying richness without excessive intensity.
Narrative Coffee Stand x Pelle & Pepe
We are not sure if the new cafe in Joo Chiat Place is really a cafe with no name or if it is merely a situation where signage installation is still underway (we have seen photos where there was a name “The Olive Door” on the shop facade). Regardless of its name (or no name), the shop at #01-01 83 Joo Chiat Place is a cosy space where you will find Narrative Coffee Stand and Pelle & Pepe Bakery. That means is a great spot for excellent coffee and delightful plant-based bakes.
