Dewakan is Malaysia’s top restaurant according to Asia’s 50 Best and the Michelin Guide. The only 2 Michelin Star Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur offers diners a spectacular view while enjoying Chef Darren Teoh’s avant-garde Malaysian dishes prepared with locally-sourced indigenous ingredients.
Dewakan Restaurant
Dewakan is located on the 48th floor of Skyviews, Naza Tower, which overlooks the KLCC Park. Full height windows allow diners to have a spectacular view of the Kuala Lumpur city centre and the iconic Petronas Twin Towers.
The restaurant is small with only 8 tables in the main dining hall. There is a private room that can accommodate 8 guests.
There is a luxurious lounge area for guest waiting for their tables and for those those who want to linger a bit longer over drinks after dinner.
Dewakan was awarded 2 Michelin Stars in November 2023. It is the only 2 Michelin Star restaurant in Malaysia.
Pre-Dinner Tour
As soon as we enter the fine dining restaurant, we were warmly greeted. We were told that instead of being led to our table, we would first be given a kitchen tour. The first stop of the pre-dinner tour was to a table where a wide variety of fresh ingredients were laid out. They were all locally sourced – either from peninsular Malaysia or from the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. There were fruits and roots which we had never heard of before. Exotic items included a ginger with mango scent and a plant that had the smell of blue cheese.
Next stop was the shelf of vats where in-house sauces were stored. Apparently Dewakan would never throw away parts of ingredients not used for preparation of dishes served to the diners. The chefs would use the “leftovers” to create sauces which they could use in the future.
We were then led through the kitchen to see the chefs at work, before we were shown to our table.
Dewakan Tasting Menu
Only a tasting menu was available – the Dewakan Tasting Menu at RM788.80 per person. Alcoholic or non-alcoholic paring was available. You could even have a Mingle pairing – so you could get alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks with different dishes.
Dinner at Dewakan
Dinner at Dewakan was an elaborate affair. There was a starter plus 12 courses. Each course was presented in a stylish manner and finishing touches for some dishes were done at the table. The server would dutifully explain the ingredients of each dish. It could be a bit overwhelming. There was so much information and an abundance of sensory delights, captivating our eyes, nose and palate.
All the dishes were good and every one of them was very interesting. There was creative use of local ingredients to produce unusual combinations of tastes, textures and scents. In several dishes, the sauces possessed such complex flavours that they took precedence.
Desserts in 2 Michelin Star Restaurant
There were 3 dessert courses to ensure that the fine dining meal would end on a triply sweet note.
Each of the desserts was delightful but Kuih Sarang Semut (or Ant’s Nest Cake) was the most memorable. The simple sweet brown honeycomb cake with slightly chewy texture had familiar and comforting taste and texture.
Experiential Dining
Having a meal at Dewakan is experiential dining. The restaurant provides a spectacular view, narrates intriguing stories about indigenous ingredients and Malaysia’s culinary traditions, offers inventive menus and focuses on sensory immersion. Every facet of the dining experience at Dewakan is designed to surprise and delight customers. Guests may not recall every detail of Dewakan dishes, but dining at the 2 Michelin Star Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur will be an experience that is hard to forget.
