Arva Restaurant Aman Tokyo – An Italian Lunch Worth Trying

Arva Restaurant Aman Tokyo was our choice of venue for lunch partly because we wanted to see one of the most expensive and beautiful hotels in Tokyo, Japan. And partly because the lunch is reasonably priced considering the ultra-premium status of this property.

Aman Hotel Tokyo

Space is a key feature at this Tokyo hotel – lots of it. The hotel lobby as well as restaurants are on the 33rd floor of the Otemachi Tower. It only has suites at this hotel, the most affordable ones are 70 sqm and cost from around ¥240,000 per night. The lobby itself is an amazing place. With a high ceiling that stretches up to eight storeys and a zen decor. This is a place of tranquillity, unlike the hotel lobbies that we are used to.

The Arva Italian Restaurant is one of the f & b places situated next to the lobby. According to the restaurant website, “Avra” means ‘cultivated land’ in Latin and “Arva brings the rustic, flavour-focused culinary traditions of Italy to Aman Tokyo… the Italian restaurant celebrates fresh seasonal ingredients in simple but creative dishes, full of soul

This is a picture of the Arva Restaurant Aman – 3 course lunch with coffee priced at Yen 9,000. It is a simple arrangement with fixed items for starter and dessert. There is only one decision to make – fish or meat as the main course.

Lunch at Aman Tokyo Hotel

It was a quiet restaurant at the time of our visit. Apart from us, there were only three other small dining parties. The tranquility of the lobby permeated to the restaurant. This was the most peaceful meal we had in Tokyo.

In line with the decor of the hotel, the restaurant layout and table arrangements were unfussy. No frills, just good quality furniture and utensils laid out systematically. A heavily starched linen placemat provided the backdrop for the food.

Arva Restaurant Aman Lunch – Appetiser and Starter

Breadsticks, some snacks and a bowl of soup were served at the start of the meal. Simple and beautiful were the words that came to mind. Delightful items to nibble on before the real food arrives.

The first course was pike conger fritter with some tomato based sauce. Conger pikes must be in season at the end of the year as this fish was served in quite a few of the restaurants in Tokyo during our visit this time. The fish was lightly fried and coated with the thinnest of batter. It reminded us of our tempura lunch at Tatsumi where the tempura was cooked with only a very fine layer of batter. A good dish with touches of Japanese tempura and Italian sauce.

Main Courses

With only two main course choices, we picked one of each. The first was “tagliata di pollo’ which according to an internet search means sliced chicken. More specifically in this case, rooster from Yamanashu Nakamura. This was an enjoyable dish overall but not so much because of the chicken but the nice pasta which was chewy with great texture.

Our other main course was sautéed Sawara mackerel which we like because it did not have the level of fishiness that mackerels are prone to having. Only a mild flavour to remind us of the type of fish. Just as good were the accompanying seafood items. A peanut pesto sauce provided the Italian touch.

Dessert

Dessert was distinctly Italian. Tiramisu with Domori chocolate and strong espresso dispensed from a Moka pot. A modified form of affogato perhaps. Nothing combines better than espresso and dark chocolate. This finished our lunch at Arva Restaurant Aman Tokyo on a high note.
