SUN with MOON Japanese Dining & Cafe at Wheelock Place is an affordable Japanese restaurant at Singapore’s Orchard Road. The wide range of Japanese cuisine available caters to different budgets and preferences. Which may be why it is one of the oldest restaurants in this mall and possibly the most popular as well.

Popular Japanese Restaurant at Wheelock Place

The SUN with MOON Japanese restaurant has been at Wheelock Place for as long as we can remember. Many other restaurants have come and gone but this restaurant is still going strong. In fact the restaurant space at level 3 Wheelock Place seems to have grown larger.

Apart from the food, the decor of the restaurant is also attractive. The large place has different sections which have their own personalities. The private room (picture below) is probably the best place to be at.

A cafe-style area and counter seating provide other options. It gets quite crowded at peak hours so it’s best to have an advance reservation.

What We Ate at SUN With MOON Japanese Restaurant

For our lunch at Wheelock place we had tried Kamameshi sets, a chirashi lunch set and a la carte sushi. This is a picture of all the food on the table.

Kamameshi Lunch Sets

According to Wikipedia, Kamameshi ” translates to “kettle rice” and is a traditional Japanese rice dish cooked in an iron pot called a kama.” Later, kamameshi came to refer to a type of Japanese rice cooked with various types of meat, seafood, and vegetables. By cooking the rice and various ingredients in an iron pot, the rice gets slightly burned, adding a desirable flavor to the rice.

We had two Kamameshi sets. Each set comes with a Kama pot and a choice of 3 side dishes from this list: California roll, mixed seafood in yam sauce, cold spinach in dashi, fried salmon in vinegar, steamed chicken pieces and pickled radish.

Our Salmon and Tori Kamameshi ($25.80, picture above) was one of the more affordable ones. The salmon and chicken topping was quite substantial and tasted good. Of the side dishes we selected, the best ones are the spinach, fried salmon and mixed seafood.

Salmon belly and unagi set ($29.80) was our other Kama set, The unagi provided additional smoky flavour to the rice.

Chirashi Set and Tuna Sushi

Our Nama Bara Chirashi Set ($38.80) was the most photogenic set of the day. The side dishes for this set were a small serving of mixed tempura and miso soup. The tempura was good for this price. As for the chirashi, the fish roe and colourful chunks of fish and vegetables brightened up the table. With ingredients that had a feel and taste of freshness, this was an enjoyable set.

We also selected an item from the a la carte dish – Maguro Sushi Moriwase $40.80. This was a plate of fatty, semi fat and regular tuna. We were impressed by the quality of this dish, especially the fatty tuna which was better than what we were expecting at this budget.
