Kau Kee Beef Brisket Noodles (九記牛腩) was a restaurant in Central, Hong Kong that we had not tried before. We had it on our shortlist as It was highly recommended to us by friends. Its title as a Michelin Bib Gourmand Restaurant also added to its appeal.
Beef Brisket Bib Gourmand Restaurant
Situated in between the Central and Sheung Wan MTR stations, Kau Kee beef brisket restaurant looks closer to the latter on the map. That may be so but it lies quite high up the mid-levels slope. For those with weak knees, I think it is better to go via Central and use the mid-levels escalator to the level of Gage Street and head west from there. Being quite high up the hill, the restaurant is in a pleasant neighbourhood, not as hectic as the streets down below.
Kau Kee Beef Noodles HK is small, but neat and tidy. Like other small and popular restaurants in Hong Kong such as Yat Lok, sharing tables with strangers is the norm here. Unlike Yat Lok, fortunately, the space is not as packed and squeezy. In fact, it felt rather pleasant by comparison.
There are some house rules at Kau Kee Beef Noodles HK – a minimum spend of HK$70 per person is one of them.
Kau Kee Beef Noodles Menu
Here are pictures of the Kau Kee HK restaurant menu in 5 languages – Chinese, English, Thai, Korean and Japanese. This place has an international appeal.
Items in the Kau Kee HK menu are permutations of the meat (beef slices, tendon, brisket), carbohydrates (types of noodles or rice) and soup (broth, curry).
Best Beef Brisket Noodle in Hong Kong?
Kau Kee Beef Brisket Noodles has sometimes been described as the best beef brisket noodle in Hong Kong. There is also the question of whether the curry version is better than the broth version. Since there were only the two of us with limited tummy space, we tried a beef brisket noodle in curry and a beef slices with flat noodles in broth (HK$70 each).
The beef brisket curry tasted as fiery as it looks. It was a very good curry as it was not just hot but with a depth of flavours. Those who like their curry really hot will like it. We thought that we have sufficient training in Singapore to deal with hot spicy food. But this was still too much for us. We were unable to taste the beef brisket and other ingredients in the bowl. The pieces of beef brisket were not as soft as we were expecting. Some were quite tough. We think the one back home in Singapore at Mei Ling Street beef noodles where the beef is soft with a slight chewiness in the tendons.
More suitable for our palate was the beef slices in broth with flat noodles. The broth was lightly beefy. But the best part was the flat noodles which looked like Singapore mee pok. The texture had the “Q” quality – chewy and springy. Beef slices were ok but not as memorable as the noodles.
Our cost of dining at Kau Kee Beef Brisket Noodles (九記牛腩) in Hong Kong was HK$140. A simple bill was issued and payment was made at the cashier before exiting the restaurant.
