Afternoon Tea: A Leisurely Tradition Making a Comeback in Singapore

Afternoon tea, a delightful tradition with a rich history, is enjoying a resurgence in Singapore. While brunches were all the rage for a while, it seems the tide has turned. Perhaps it is the rise of flexible work arrangements, giving people more time in the afternoon. Or maybe it is simply the allure of a relaxing experience indulging in sweet and savoury treats. Whatever the reason, Singapore’s hotels and restaurants are offering a tempting array of afternoon tea options, catering to a variety of tastes.

The tradition of afternoon tea originated in England back in the 18th century. High society ladies would gather in the afternoons to socialize and enjoy a light meal to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner. Traditionally, afternoon tea consisted of a three-tiered stand: savouries on the bottom, scones with jam and clotted cream in the middle, and sweet pastries on top.

While some establishments still offer the classic English afternoon tea, Singapore’s take on this tradition is more diverse.
