The Scholar Chinese Restaurant : Hakka Cuisine at NUSS Kent Ridge in June

The Scholar Chinese Restaurant is one of the f & b outlets located at the NUSS Guild House at Kent Ridge. From April to June 2024, they are featuring Hakka cuisine on the menu. My last Hakka meal was a visit to Plum Village, the oldest Hakka Restaurant in Singapore, so I was glad to be able to try this at The Scholar, before the Hakka food promotion runs out after 30 June 2024.

Hakka Cuisine at NUSS The Scholar Chinese Restaurant

The Scholar is a regular Chinese restaurant serving the members and guests of the Kent Ridge Guild House (KRGH), the largest of the three guild houses managed by the National University of Singapore Society (NUSS). I believe they have food promotions once in a while and Hakka food was featured from April to June 2024. But only quite a modest spread of Hakka dishes was available. Here is a picture of the Hakka food menu at NUSS which only has five varieties of Hakka dishes.

Hakka Food that We Ate

Our server was kind enough to warn us that the portions were rather big and so we limited our order to just two items: stuffed tofu with minced pork ($20) and braised pork belly with preserved mustard greens ($35). This turned out to be more than enough for two.

The stuffed tofu was served in four large pieces. We made mental comparison of the traditional Hakka yong tau fu that we tried at Plum Village. Here, the pieces of stuffed bean curd were more substantial both in terms of weight and taste. I think I prefer the more lighter, delicate version at Plum Village.

Even larger was the braised pork belly dish. This was probably designed to feed four or more pax. The two of us could only eat a third of this and packed the rest home for another meal. This was an awesome dish. The gravy was thick and flavourful and enhanced by a generous amount of preserve mustard greens (chopped into fine pieces). Probably cooked for a long time, the pork was soft and had absorbed a lot of the dark gravy flavours.

We only wished that the pork belly was less fatty. But I realise that this is really a matter of taste. Some folks order pork belly precisely because of the fat. Anyway, this was a great dish to eat with plain rice or porridge.
