Thirty9 Restaurant is a small, laid back restaurant on Duxton Hill. It is said to offer “Italian-Mediterranean cuisine crafted from premium ingredients.” A combination which sounds irresistible. Which was why we decided to have dinner there recently.
New Italian Restaurant at Duxton
It is easy to find the new Thirty9 restaurant. Its address is no.39 Duxton Hill which is next to popular Italian restaurant Latteria Mozzarella Bar. Both restaurants are run by the same folks. Thirty9 Restaurant enjoys a nice location at the middle of row of conserved shophouses at the Hill. A cute Chinese restaurant that we like, Xiao Ya Tou, lives a bit further down the Hill.
It is a cosy restaurant with a few alfresco tables and some tables indoors. A large skylight sits on top of the main dining area. We were glad the tables were spaced reasonably far apart.
A large glass window provides a peek into the going-ons in the kitchen.
Thirty9 Restaurant Menu
A full set of the restaurant menu and drinks list is available on the restaurant website, so these are just samples of some pages so you can have an idea of what to eat at the Thirty9 Restaurant. We ordered a mix of dishes for our dinner from the a la carte menu. There is also a set lunch menu (starting from $33++ per pax) and a degustation menu ($156++ for 2 Pax).
Thirty9 Restaurant Corkage and Wine
Good food would be better if enjoyed with good wine. A fairly extensive wine menu is available, with bottle prices starting from around $90 ++. As for those planning to BYO, the website has this to say : “Corkage Policy strictly applies. Mon-Thur 1 for 1 or S$80++ corkage fee, max. 2 bottles per table. No BYO for groups of 6pax+.” We think a 1 for 1 policy is a fair one, which is why we think it’s best to dine here on Mondays to Thursdays. This is a sample page from the wine list.
We selected a bottle of white wine from the menu – 2020 Louis Latour Pouilly Fuisse ($128). Our BYO wine for the dinner was a bottle of 2006 Cos d’Estournel. With a white Burgundy and a red Bordeaux on hand, we could cover almost anything on the menu was the plan.
A Smart Casual Italian Dinner
Bread and Starters
Dinner started with a generous bread platter consisting of bread sticks and two types of foccacia bread. The olive oil provided was pretty good.
More munches followed with an appetiser of Proscuitto ham, Burrata cheese and chiachierre bread. The latter was a type of bread we have not tried before. It reminded me of you tiao, which I thought went well with the ham.
Another starter was the “POLPO” – Grilled octopus, chickpeas, paprika, chorizo. We had mixed feelings about this one. The taste was very good but the octopus bits were very small.
Main Course and Dessert
Our pasta dish of homemade pappardelle pasta with pork cheek ragù, tomato sauce, red wine, Parmigiano cheese ($34) was very good. A chewy thick pasta with a heavy meaty sauce is always good as a main course.
The grilled beef rib eye ($68) was also very enjoyable. Both the steak and pasta were best friends with the red wine. We were happy that there was a 1 for 1 no corkage fee arrangement at Thirty9.
Our dessert was tiramisu ($16). Rich and heavy with a healthy dose of alcohol, we were glad we only had one dessert for sharing.
