Asakusa Nagami is located in a residential area in Tokyo. Fifteen minutes walk from Asakusa Station away from the crowds of tourists at Sensoji Temple and adjoining shopping streets. This was a convenient place for a quiet lunch after a visit to the busy Asakusa sightseeing areas.
Quiet Restaurant Near Sensoji Temple
Eight-seat restaurant and one chef. The small traditional restaurant was efficiently run by just the chef himself being in attendance. Perhaps it was a quiet lunch with only four diners and he could cope with doing the cooking, serving and taking orders by himself. But it was quite an experience to see the chef multi-tasking and socialising with the diners at the same time. Personal service does not get more personal than this.
Asakusa Nagami Menu
There is no menu at the restaurant, only fixed course menus for lunch and dinner. At the time of our visit, there was only one lunch course available – the Nagami lunch course which costs 8,800 yen per person (tax included). We did not know the number of courses or type of food in advance. We found out as the lunch moved along – it was a menu dominated by seafood (which we were very happy to discover).
Starters and Appetisers
Chawanmushi and sashimi kicked off our lunch. Bearing in mind the reasonable price of 8800 yen, it was not unexpected that modest types of fish was served throughout the meal. I cannot remember the type of fish served, only that they were fresh and tasty,
The next course was semi-cooked and smoked mackerel. A bunch of straw was set on fire in a metal can. A piece of fish was toasted over the flame. The semi-cooked mackerel was served sliced with a bunch of seasoned vegetables. The flavours of smokey fish and vinegared vegetables combined very well.
Lunch at Asakusa Nagami : Cooked Fish
Next to be served were two kinds of fish, cooked in different ways. The first fish (I cannot remember what it was) was simply cooked with a light broth. The second one was a piece of grilled mackerel. Not exotic types of fish, but very nice and prepared well.
Crab Rice and Dessert
Quietly cooking on the stove during lunch were these two stoneware pots. Their contents were revealed at the last part of the meal. Crabmeat rice!
Nice and slightly fragrant (more crab content would have been even better), the rice combined with miso soup and pickles for a classic Japanese end to the savoury part of the meal.
A sweet dessert brought our One Star Michelin lunch at Asakusa Nagami to an end.
