Best Tokyo Hotel In-Room Dining Experience

We experienced the best Tokyo hotel in-room dining during our recent stay at the Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo. A great cityscape view, a table setting that can rival a fine-dining restaurant and a menu as thick as a phone directory are some of the attractions.

Room Service at Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo

The famous Shangri-La Tokyo has a super convenient location near the Tokyo Station. It is not a very visible hotel as it sits on the upper floors of an office building – the Marunouchi Trust Tower Main building. It is next to Daimaru department store and the Takashimaya Nihonbashi main store is a ten-minute walk.

There are more than enough top food choices within a 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel, so room service may not seem necessary. But there are cold days or rainy days when going out is inconvenient. However, in our case, it is usually the lazy days that make us look up the room service options. With a clear view of Tokyo Station and the surrounding Marunouchi area and a table setting like this, we may want to try out more of the Shangri-La Tokyo in-room dining options in the future.

Best Tokyo Hotel In-Room Dining Menu We Have Seen

The room service menu at Shangri-La Tokyo felt like a hardcover coffee table book. The various dining options were classified by chapters. In addition to the usual meal and food categories they also have a Nadaman restaurant section as well as Halal and vegetarian sections.

Here are some pages from the menu which we thought looked interesting. The sushi and wagyu dishes look good (but were pricey).

There were more affordable Japanese food options such as ramen and oyakodon. We decided on a pork tonkatsu (3,960 yen) from the Japanese food section.

There were premium versions of familiar Asian dishes such as laksa and wanton noodles. But the price difference between that and what we are used to paying at home disqualified most of the items in the Asian specialities section. Instead we turned to the Western and International specialities section and decided on a humble fish and chips (4,620 yen).

Tonkatsu and Fish & Chips in Tokyo

This was our first time trying the room service at Shangri-La Tokyo. Out of precaution, we selected two of the more affordable items on the in-room dining menu. We were pleasantly surprised by both the quality and the attractive presentation of the food.

Both the fish and chips and pork tonkatsu arrived hot and crispy and were very good. On a lazy day when we did not feel like dressing up to go out, these comfort food dishes served their purpose. Room service also has the advantage of a wide range of beverages at very affordable prices. In this case the vast selection of sake from the Daimaru supermarket next door. And also complimentary coffee from the resident Nespresso machine.
