Bebek goreng (fried duck) and ayam penyet are the star dishes at Indonesian restaurant Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut. We went to the Westgate outlet of the Indonesian restaurant for a quick meal of crispy fried duck, smashed fried chicken and kang kong belachan.
Bebek Goreng Restaurant at Westgate
Described on its website as pioneers of bebek goreng in Singapore, Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut has three outlets in Singapore : Lucky Plaza, Singpost Centre and Westgate. It also has restaurants in Indonesia and Malaysia.
The Westgate outlet is located in basement one of Westgate shopping mall in Jurong East. The restaurant is simple, clean and spacious. We arrived just before the weekday peak lunch crowd and enjoyed a quiet ambience. The place soon filled up by the time we finished our lunch.
Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut Menu
Here are pictures of the restaurant menu. Fried duck and chicken are the main dishes, prepared in several ways. We picked three of the recommended dishes with the thumbs-up symbol – original fried duck, original fried chicken and kangkong
Signature Original Crispy Fried Duck (Bebek Goreng Original)
The signature duck dish ($11.90) is said to be prepared using the freshest ducks which are marinated for 24 hours to enhance its rich flavors. We found the duck to be flavourful and crisp. But the portion of duck was quite small and we would have preferred the meat to be more moist. The duck and rice was also accompanied by pieces of tofu and tempeh.
Ayam Penyet Original
The original smash fried chicken ($9.90) looked not very smashed up. But it had a nice taste and the drumstick we got was quite plump. It was less dry than the duck, but still slightly dry.
Kangkong Belachan
This was a good dish of kang kong. The vegetable was cooked well, soft but still retaining enough texture and the belachan seasoning was just right, spicy enough but not too hot.
Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut Chilli
The item that received our most valuable player award for lunch was the chilli. Any imperfections in the food we encountered were smoothed over by the fiery chilli that has more of a kick than Ronaldo. A small dish of this chilli is provided for each dish. The amount of chilli can be applied according to the diner’s preference. This, I think is what will make us come back to try more dishes at this Indonesian restaurant at Westgate.
