Cheerful Goat is a new café at Stamford Arts Centre. Sitting on the grond floor of the heritage building, the new Cheerful Goat Café is a good option for those who want a quick drink and snack. It is also for people who like good coffee and unique drinks.

New Café at Stamford Arts Centre

According to their website, the Cheerful Goat name is derived from the legend about how coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia centuries ago. It says –
“Legend has it that a goat herder noticed his goats became more lively and energetic after after eating coffee berries. Cheerful Goat reflects this spirit, representing the joy and positive energy that coffee brings. We believe every cup of coffee is an opportunity to create a special experience, helping to hone in senses, focus better, and inspire mindfulness.”

Cheerful Goat occupies the ground floor of Stamford Arts Centre, a 1920s building originally constructed as a Japanese elementary school. The structure blends Neo-Classical and Art Deco styles with carefully restored pediments, friezes, and fluted pilasters. The building is now repurposed as an arts centre.

The café makes clever use of limited space. There is a big circular bar. Small tables and wall-hugging seats maximize seating capacity. Large glass windows flood the interior with natural light, creating an airy feel despite the compact layout.

Cheerful Goat operates on a simple model. Customers order and pay at the counter or scan a QR code to order online. Staff deliver food and drinks to tables.

What’s on the Menu

Cheerful Goat built its reputation on “Pocket Coffee” – freeze-dried instant coffee in portable packaging. The coffee comes in various roast levels, such as 75% Dark Roast with notes of dark chocolate and caramel, and 90% Dark+ Roast with berry and cocoa flavours.
The café offers coffee, tea, other beverages and pastries. Coffee options include standard brews alongside more adventurous creations such as the Bao Ke Tu and Lait De Soi – unusual but welcome departure from the norms. Below are screenshots of pages from the digital menu.
Americano & Pastry Set

When we visited, there was an Americano & Pastry Set for $10. The hot Americano delivered a clean, bright flavour profile. The almond croissant had the right balance of buttery layers and almond filling. Nothing groundbreaking but a satisfying tea time snack.

Quatrime

The star of the day came in the form of the Quatrime ($11). It was a blend of raspberry oolong tea, plum wine, coffee, and plum syrup, topped with a smoke bubble. The combination was unusual but worked well. The fruity notes balanced the coffee’s taste, while the plum wine added depth without overwhelming. The smoke bubble just added theatrical flair, and vanished in an instant.

Good coffee and interesting beverages
Cheerful Goat is a welcome addition. The new café does what it does well. It offers good coffee and other interesting beverages in a space with character. It is a good place for a pitstop, especially if you are going to the Stamford Arts Centre or exploring the surrounding Waterloo Street area.
