Chin Mee Chin Confectionery Reopens
The East Coast icon, Chin Mee Chin Confectionery, reopens its doors. The Hainanese-style coffeeshop that has been operating in Katong since the 1920s closed its doors in 2018. It has been revived under lifestyle brand Ebb & Flow Group and is helmed by Maxine Ngooi, who also runs Tigerlily Patisserie.
Maxine Ngooi has been working with Sharon Tan, granddaughter of the confectionery’s late founder, and her mother Leong Kwang Ling, to recreate some of Chin Mee Chin’s traditional bakes. The good old kaya toast and eggs are still the fans’ favourites.

Celebrate craft in all forms at Thirty Six Brewlab and Smokehouse
Brand new excitement awaits at 36 Club Street with the catchily named Thirty Six Brewlab & Smokehouse from local craft brewery Lion Brewery Co. The welcoming micro-brewery and restaurant has a distinct mission statement – a celebration of craftsmanship in all forms: food, art, music and of course beer.
The space features a state-of-the-arton-site 500-litre microbrewery and 23 taps pouring a selection of the finest craft beer including Lion Brewery Co’s flagship and seasonal brews, and a constantly changing lineup of beers brewed right on site at the microbrewery, the ‘Thirty Six Brewlab’.
Along with the brewlab, nestled inside this heritage building, is a 120-seat restaurant featuring a hedge-lined outdoor beer garden and a menu centred around open-flame grilling on a custom-built brick hearth. Dishes focus on bold, local flavours and a smoky umami that only true, open-flame cooking can produce, and each dish was personally conceptualised and developed by Executive Chef Kwek Xiu Rong (affectionately known as XR). New Griglia Open Fire Italian Kitchen
Griglia, nestled on the ground level of a 3-storey conservation shophouse along Craig Road, is a new 41-seater restaurant with an open kitchen. Inspired by the outdoor setting of a summer outdoor grill known as the grigliat, its warm and cosy interior showcases wood, brick and metal, raw materials and elements closely linked to fire. The 1,600-square-feet restaurant promises conviviality, bonding and memory-making over the fire.
Griglia recreates the magic of classic grigliata dishes cooked in a specially customised cast iron charcoal grill, using traditional and modern methods to make them even lighter and more refreshing. By offering a wide selection of food, and serving smaller sharing portions, diners are encouraged to order and taste many dishes in the style of the ‘bring-your-own’ grigliata.

New Tempura Makino giving out free tempura eggs from 22 to 24 September
Tempura Makino, a popular tempura specialty chain from Japan, will be launching the first outpost outside of Japan in Suntec City, Singapore.
Tempura Makino is a specialty restaurant known for their delicious, handcrafted tempura made to order in front of guests. Customers can enjoy freshly prepared, seasonal dishes and ingredients served in a comfortable yet elegant environment which allows for high quality, handcrafted tempura to be enjoyed by all. Known as the “Tsudoage” style, it is usually found in more expensive and traditional prices, and at a much higher cost.
The a la carte tempura items are all reasonably priced from $1.50 per piece. Other than the contemporary tempura options, the menu includes Okinawan influences such as the Goya Tempura with Okinawan salt ($4.50), as well as Mozuku Tempura ($5.80). There are also Daikon Oden ($3.80, Mentai Seaweed ($6.8) and Uni Ohba ($8.8) dishes to be enjoyed.

Ichigo Ichie – An Encounter For A Lifetime

Ichigo Ichie, a fine-dining kappo restaurant, is helmed by Chef Akane Eno, who weaves authentic Japanese flavours, driven by quality seasonal ingredients, into intimate personal celebrations of the passing encounter between chef and diner.
‘Ichigo ichie’ (一期一会), an ancient Japanese proverb loosely translated as ”one life, one moment”, applies to an unforgettable experience that one cherishes for a lifetime.
Complementing ‘ichigo ichie’ is ‘sanpō yoshi’, a code of social and commercial behaviour rooted in Edo Japan of the 17th century. Sanpō yoshi emphasises relationships, prizing trust and ‘giving back’, especially through acts of reciprocity. A new initiative inspired by sanpō yoshi will be launched, where a part of the proceeds from special menus, available for a limited time, will be given back to industry partners. The inaugural project focuses on Azumano Fumoto Sake Brewery, established in 1896 in Yamagata Prefecture and introduced to Chef Eno by a mutual friend in Japan.
A month-long sanpō yoshi menu, including selected dishes which use special ingredients such as Iga Beef and golden ikura, will be offered from 15 September to 15 October 2021. A portion of the proceeds from this menu will be used to purchase rice from rice farmers in Yamagata. Azumano Fumoto Sake Brewery will use the sake quality rice to create a private label bottle of sake exclusive to Ichigo Ichie, ready in 2022. Students from the Tōhoku University of Art & Design will receive the opportunity to design the new sake label – another way to give back to the local community.
When the sake is ready, guests who had made bookings for the sanpō yoshi menu will receive a complimentary bottle of the exclusive sake when they return for dinner. All guests will also enjoy a complimentary welcome glass of the special drink.
