Kai Garden Restaurant (嘉苑) is a new Cantonese restaurant that recently opened in December 2015 in  Marina Square, adding to our choice of Chinese dining options in Singapore. The restaurant is helmed by chef Fung Chi Keung who had left the Paradise Group to start this new venture. Located on the third level of Marina Square mall, it is tucked in a corner just below the food court on the 4th floor. It is not the most visible of places but when we finally got there, it was worth the search.

Sumiya Suntec City (Closed)

Sumiya Suntec City is the second outlet of this izakaya styled Japanese restaurant. Their first one is at Orchard Central. According to their website, “Sumiya” means charcoal (sumi) house (ya) and “is specialized in charcoal-grilled items and fresh seafood flown into Singapore 2 -3 times a week. Master Chef Naoki Tsuzuki aims to present 2 different dining experiences at the 2 Sumiya outlets located at Orchard Central & Suntec City. ” The highlight of Sumiya Suntec City is the Irori Genshiyaki,  an old style of grilling over charcoal flame. Fish on skewers are vertically grilled over an irori (charcoal bed) so that the surface of the fish stays crisp while retaining the succulence of the meat inside.

Famous Hokkien restaurant Beng Hiang, now in Jurong East

Beng Hiang is one of the most famous and popular Hokkien restaurants in Singapore. For years they had operated from a large shophouse space along Amoy Street. They had decided earlier this year to relocate from there to take up an equally large space (11,248 sq ft to be exact) in Block 135 Jurong Gateway Road in Jurong East. This follows a similar decision by another famous Teochew restaurant Huat Kee who decided to relocate from Amoy Street to the RELC Centre. Beng Hiang had taken over the space which was formerly occupied by another restaurant, Boon Lay Raja who had apparently sold off the premises for $15 million, according to a Straits Times story.

Emperor’s Meal at Kaiserhaus Restaurant (Closed)

Kaiserhaus Restaurant in Capitol Piazza has a unique concept of offering cuisines of the former Habsburg Empire which at the end of the 19th century extended over Austria, Hungary, Northern Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and parts of Poland, Serbia, Romania and the Ukraine. We had been to Kaiserhaus for its affordable set lunch when it was newly opened (see The new Kaiserhaus restaurant at Capitol Piazza, Singapore). We return to try items on its a la carte menu and it turned out to be quite a heavy but enjoyable lunch.

The Coffee Academics Singapore outlet opens at Scotts Square, next to Pedder on Scotts

(Updated 11 June 2016 – Current menu and more pictures at the bottom of this post; also see our 2018 post here.) The first Coffee Academics Singapore outlet (TCA) recently opened in Scotts Square. The new cafe by  the highly rated coffee specialty store from Hong Kong takes up 3,000 square feet of space at Level 2 of this glamorous mall. The rest of Level 2 is now occupied by ladies’ shoes retailer, On Pedder, which has done a good job in converting the whole floor into a ladies’ shoes paradise. This bold expansion had apparently played a part in attracting TCA to Scotts. The founder of Coffee Academics, Jennifer Liu, said in an interview with the Today newspaper that  they were close to signing a lease for a shophouse in the Duxton area but ended up with Scotts Square because she liked its innovative approach in opening the Pedder On Scotts store.

Mexican Food in Singapore – Guzman Y Gomez @ Star Vista

There are not many restaurants serving Mexican Food in Singapore. Which is why we were happy to see Guzman Y Gomez set up an outlet in Star Vista, Buona Vista. According to their website, Guzman Y Gomez was founded in 2006 and “was named to honour old friends and created to introduce Mexican food and Latin culture to the world”. They have three outlets in Singapore – Asia Square Tower 2 and Chevron House. The outlet at Star Vista is their third.
