With so many restaurants to choose from at Westgate, it is always a challenge deciding what to eat when we are there. This time we decided to have lunch at Ippudo. Partly because we have always been quite fond of the taste of the their ramen and also we wanted to check out the $20 set lunch that we saw on the stand outside the Ippudo ramen restaurant at Westgate, Singapore.
The restaurant is quite small and not as luxuriously appointed as the Mandarin Gallery one. The Ippudo set lunch at Westgate is available on weekdays and lets you select one of their famous ramen, an appetizer and a drink. In all our previous visits to Ippudo, we have always stuck to what we think is the best ramen in Ippudo – the Akamaru Shin-Aji. So for this time, we decided not to be so boring and decided to order a Shiromaru MotoAji in addition to an Akamaru. For the appetizer, we chose the mini salad and mini karage.
Mini Salad and his new found friends
Mini Karage – not so sociable
The salad was quite ordinary. We finished it because vegetables are supposed to be good for you. The karage was much better. Deep fried pieces of chicken which had probably been seasoned to be tasty and crispy on the outside.
The ramen arrived soon after. The Shiromaru looked very pale by comparison to the Akamaru. The taste was not bad but was a bit bland. Our suggestion is that you add in a lot of the condiments available – raw garlic, sesame seeds and some chili powder. You have to request for the garlic and squeeze them yourself. After all that extra flavouring, the ramen tasted quite good. But we would still go back to the Akamaru next time.
The Akamaru Shin-Aji ramen was as good as we remembered it to be. Forget about the other types of ramen – just order this and you won’t go wrong. Squeeze in two or three cloves of garlic and it is perfect. The taste is deep and complex and stays with you even after you finished eating. So vampires will stay clear of you but it is not advisable if you have a meeting after the meal.
The total bill for two came up to $47.10 after taxes and service charge. It was a satisfying lunch especially with the Akamaru. Although upon reflection, it is quite expensive for a meal of noodles in Jurong.

ippudo looks the same everywhere.. i guess that’s a good thing hehehe i love it!
yes they seem to be very consistent!
Yep their karage is nice, but the place is too cramped and noisy. The one & only time I went to this outlet, there was a lady next to us talking at the top of her voice making it impossible to have a normal tone conversation with my friend.
