Golden Peony Chinese restaurant in Conrad Hotel Singapore

The Golden Peony Chinese restaurant in the Conrad Hotel Singapore is a beautiful place.  The overall feel of the place is bright and contemporary.  But there were enough subtle clues such as the big round tables, the art on the walls and scattered Chinese antique-styled furniture to leave us in no doubt that this was a Chinese restaurant.

We were there on a Saturday for lunch.  Surprisingly the Golden Peony restaurant was empty when we first stepped in.  More people turned up eventually but the place was less than half full.  We were handed a “weekend dim sum experience” menu which costs $59 per person.  That weekend lunch set provides for a selection of four types of dim sum and 4 types of regular dishes from the shortlisted items.

We had planned on a quick dim sum lunch, but were told that the regular ala carte menus were not available, although we can avoid the fixed menu and simply order specific items from the weekend menu. Which was what we did. But here are some pages from the regular Golden Peony menu for future reference.

The regular dim sum menu at Golden Peony certainly looked more interesting than the dim sum items in the weekend menu which were mostly the usual dim sum suspects.    The BBQ pork buns ($4.80) and the Bo Luo Bao ($5.20) were regular dim sum items.  Not bad but nothing to write home about.

The har gao ($6) were slightly more unusual in that they have a topping of fish eggs.  The taste did not differ from the usual prawn dumplings although the eggs did add a splash of colour to make them look better in the photos.

The beancurd skin roll ($5.20) were the best dish of the day.  The rolls of beancurd skins with seafood paste filling were quite substantial and had a nice soft texture inside with a crisp crunch outside.

These shaggy prawn and dough fritters made us think of Old English Sheepdogs.  The thick layer of dough fritters covered a prawn filling. The appearance of this dish was interesting.  The size of each piece was also quite substantial.

Overall, a pleasant dim sum lunch at Golden Peony, although we were somewhat disappointed by the limited food selection on weekends .  The food was not exceptional but the ambience of the restaurant was top-notch.
