Cake Spade

The Cake Spade cake shop in Tanjong Pagar must have one of the cleverest name in the Singapore food business. It has two syllables, easy to pronounce and remember and is most appropriate for its line of business. It would have been even better if it was located in Marine Parade. They had recently moved from its small little space in Orchid Hotel down the road to a full shop space now on Tanjong Pagar Road.

In the course of doing some research for information on Cake Spade, we noticed something very striking about the reviews about this adorable cake shop.

It came as no surprise that there were many positive reviews of Cake Spade. What was interesting was that the praises flowed not just about the cakes and food at Cake Spade, but also about the owner, Zenn Eng. The praises were not just about Zenn’s baking prowess but also her beauty. We list a few quotes about Zenn:

Hungrygowhere.com:  “.. the sassy, easy-on-the-eye Zenn Eng..”

Danielfooddiary .com: ” … sweet and beautiful, with an SQ girl style of elegance …”

Sethlui.com :  “… elegant & soft spoken owner Zenn Eng…”

Cafeshopping.sg :  “It is opened by a beautiful lady who can bake really well …”

With descriptions like these, it was a matter of time before we made a trip down to Tanjong Pagar, ostensibly to try the famous cakes that others have talked about, but with the ulterior motive of stealing a glance at the beautiful, sassy, easy on the eye, elegant & soft-spoken lady that can bake really well.

Alas, we did not visit the cafe at the right time and did not get to meet the owner.  We are sorry to disappoint you but we did manage to find a picture of her in an article in the Straits Times who refers to the owner as Zenn Ng.

We hope we will eventually get to meet the owner one day, but now back to the business of eating.

The cafe space is simple and rectangular in shape. A fully stocked cake display is situated at the head of the space. All the cakes looked beautiful. Our regular readers will know our fondness for chocolate. We had to forcefully stop ourselves from ordering everything chocolate. So we finally decided on a slice of chocolate blackout cake and a nutella fudge crumble bar.

The Cake Spade cafe has a few seating options. There are seats facing the road as well as regular tables. The former seats are good if dining alone or simply just to watch the world go by while you sip the cappuccino. The regular tables are good for the more sociable people or if you prefer your photos of the food to capture the graphic tabletop patterns.

The nutella fudge crumble bar was very good. Good food is a combination of good taste, texture and looks. This crumble ticks all the boxes.

The chocolate blackout cake scored highly on the looks. But taste-wise there was no strong chocolate taste that its name and looks suggest. It was quite dense and not as light as we had imagined. Overall nice cakes and decent coffee at Cake Spade.
