A trendy space with a contemporary interior design combining elegance and homeliness is hardly a description usually associated with Sim Lim Square. However, that is what you will find in a corner of the second level of Sim Lim Square. Zeppelin & Co in Sim Lim Square is a stylish shop, with white walls and wooden furniture on bare concrete flooring, with merchandise neatly displayed. You can browse audiophile headphones and other sound equipment without any aggressive salesperson following around. Best of all, you can sit down comfortably and enjoy a good cup of coffee. Zeppelin & Co is a nice place to visit for both cafe-hoppers and audiophiles and ideal for those who are both.
Zeppelin & Co is an audio store. They sell headphones, media players, amplifiers and other audio accessories – carrying brands such as Astell & Kern, Beyerdynamic, Bose, Final Audio and Questyle. There are headphones for ordinary mortals, which costs just over a hundred dollars, as well as many headphones in the four digit range. Zeppelin & Co has garnered a following among hobbyists and music lovers because it is place where they can see the latest products, test the equipment, exchange tips, learn or just hang out.
Zeppelin & Co is also a cafe. It would not have been be easy to put a cafe in a headphone store in Sim Lim Square. Signs in electronic equipment stores prohibiting food and drink in the stores are not uncommon. Yet, Zeppelin & Co has done a great job in creating a common space where you can check out expensive audiophile equipment and enjoy a drink at the same time. You can even have your cake and eat it while listening to music using the audio gear they are selling.
Zeppelin & Co’s menu is understandably limited. There are hot and cold beverages and cakes supplied by In The Brickyard, a popular bakery specializing in Asian-inspired flavours. Here are pictures of the menu.
I ordered a flat white ($5 for 7 oz cup, $7 for 9 oz) and a slice of Chocolate Cherries with Salted Caramel & Nuts Cake ($7). No GST or service charge would be added to the bill.
The coffee was good – rich and creamy with chocolaty and nutty tones. The cake looked great and was delicious. The dense fudgy chocolate cake with thick cherry jam and salted caramel layers had the perfect texture and combination of flavours – sweet, tart and salty at the same time. It was a huge slice but there was no complaint.
Zeppelin & Co is an inviting space where I can stay as long as I want, listen to nice music, enjoy good coffee and savour delectable cake. I shall be going to Sim Lim Square more often.
