Ippudo Tanjong Pagar Centre

Famous ramen restaurant Ippudo opened their first restaurant in Mandarin Gallery, Singapore in 2009. Although we have not seen the long queues like those that formed in the early days, there seems to be firm support for their style of ramen after all these few years.  We were at Ippudo Tanjong Pagar Centre on a weekend and were surprised to see a constant stream of ramen diners in this part of town which is generally quiet without the CBD office crowd.

Ippudo Tanjong Pagar Centre occupies a stand-alone structure in the courtyard, next to Pura Brasah Spanish restaurant and the Blue Lotus Chinese Grill House.  It is not a large restaurant, we estimate that it seats around 30 diners. Here are pictures of the Ippudo set meal menu (available from 11 am to 5 pm) as well as some pages of their ala carte menu. Nowadays, Ippudo serves more than just ramen. There is a wide range of other Japanese dishes in the menu. These pictures only show a section of what is available. We selected our usual favourite ramen – Akamaru Tamago ($19) and a couple of other items.

We like the Akamaru Tamago ramen at Ippudo because of its heavy flavoured soup.  It tastes even better with a generous addition of ground sesame seeds and a few cloves of fresh garlic. The garlic and the crusher were made available on request. The extra garlic taste adds an extra dimension of complexity to the soup. But not a good idea if you happen to be on a date.

As part of the set meal arrangement, diners can order a side dish for an extra $3. We decided on the 5 piece gyoza, which normally costs $9.  Each piece of gyoza was very small but tasted very good.

We tried the octopus balls – Takoyaki ($6), a popular type of Japanese street food. The octopus balls were good, but they were smothered with too much mayonnaise and sauce which had a sweet and sour taste. We ate them with the bonito flakes but with minimum contact with the sauces.  We should make a request to reduce the sauces in the future.
