Anzu Tonkatsu is one of the several Japanese restaurants in the Japan Food Town in Wisma Atria, Orchard Road. It is the Singapore branch of a restaurant from Kyushu, Japan. According to the Japan Food Town webpage, “Anzu is a farm-to-table concept eatery from Kyushu, famous for their authentic Tonkatsu. Anzu prepares everything from fresh Kyushu produce, and they don’t just serve fresh vegetables – they grow it themselves too.” The billboard promoting a lunch menu costing only $15 provided us with the incentive to select this restaurant for lunch.
Anzu Tonkatsu, Japan Food Town is a small restaurant with a row of counter seats and a few small tables. The wooden wall surfaces and furniture gave it a warm cosy feel. Two friendly and efficient servers were in attendance.
Anzu Tonkatsu Menu
In addition to the regular Anzu menu, there were other specials being featured in the glossy flyers which are often used to great effect in Japanese restaurants. The one featuring a Hot Pot melted cheese pork loin cats set ($28). In the end we ordered one of this and one lunch time set. Here are pictures of some portions of the Anzu menu.
The lunch set was more interesting and elaborate than we were expecting from a $15 lunch. The lunch included some cold noodles, two deep-fried tonkatsu items, some oden-like items, grilled fish and an interesting shell fish. The miso soup served with it was very good as well. This was indeed a value for money set lunch, Japanese style. The lunch sets are limited to 20 per day.
The cheese hot pot with pork loin katsu was another dish which we did not know what to expect. An ancient looking big heavy pot was presented. The lid was lifted to reveal a piece of pork katsu, topped with cheese in a pot of sizing, oily broth. We were glad that the cheese used were mozzarella and cheddar which were quite mild. As you can expect the cheese, oily broth and katsu combined to make this an extremely heavy dish. The taste was very good, but this meal must have contained a thousand calories. The resulting cheesy broth can be used as a tasty gravy for the rice.
Every diner at Anzu Tonkatsu gets a free flow of cabbage salad. Fresh and crunchy, made even better with the yuzu dressing.
