Tai Cheong Bakery Singapore @ Holland Village

Tai Cheong Bakery Singapore cafe opened in Holland Village in late 2016. It has been there for almost two years and demand is still strong. The Singapore outlet of the famous Hong Kong tea cafe (char charn teng) is a little store along Lorong Liput which has a takeaway section and dining area.  It is always crowded every time we pass it. We managed to get a table there recently for breakfast.

The takeaway section at the store front sees a lot of action. The hot favourites are the egg tarts and bolo buns.

We considered ourselves lucky to secure a table in the indoor dining space. Perhaps it is easier to get a breakfast slot because the full menu is only available after 11 am. Before that, only the eggs and bread section of the menu is available plus the famous egg tarts.

Here are pictures of some sections from the Tai Cheong Singapore Menu. Being limited to the breakfast items only, we selected the scrambled eggs with toast and chicken chop ($9.50) and an egg tart ($1.90). For drinks, we had the milk tea ($2.50) and Horlicks ($2).

The egg tart was as good as everybody described them to be – a soft crumbly shell containing the smooth creamy egg content. There was no strong “eggy” taste that some other egg tarts have.  Very good indeed.  The milk tea was quite normal. The Horlicks drink brought back nostalgic memories from days gone by. When was the time you had a Horlicks drink?

The most surprising item was the egg toast with chicken. We did not have high expectations of this and it outperformed our expectations. First, it was a huge dish.  A large piece of omelette was stacked on top of a thick slice of toasted bread which in turn was stacked on a hidden piece of fried chicken. Some nice tasting gravy with mushrooms completed the package. The chicken was really well fried with crisp skin but a moist interior.  It was a very good dish and enough to feed two people.

Halfway through our breakfast, it was 11.00am, we ordered a Fried Radish Cake ($6.80). By then the place was severely crowded. It took a long time to be ready, by the time it came, we had to leave and had it doggy bagged. It was not bad but not exceptional.
