HSBC Card 1 for 1
This HSBC Card 1 for 1 deal is valid from 10 August 2018 to 15 August 2019. The HSBC promotion is not valid on eve of Public Holidays, Public Holidays, and the Sofitel’s blackout dates. We were all on leave in December and was able to book a high tea slot on a day that was not a PH. The Sofitel City Centre Singapore is not a widely known place. A couple of my high tea companions have never heard of the hotel, let alone Bar 1864. It is located at Tanjong Pagar Centre, right on top of the Tanjong Pagar MRT Station. The low off-peak parking rates at TPC also make the Sofitel an attractive venue.
The Bar 1864 is the hotel lounge that is beside their Racines Restaurant that we have previously written about. The space is bright and pleasant. It has a range of seating options which can cater for a cosy group of two or a group of ten. Perhaps because it is relatively unknown, it was not crowded when we were there. A good thing as it was peaceful and calm and we received very good service from the staff.
Here are pictures of the menu for High Tea at Bar 1864 Sofitel City Centre Singapore and the options for tea and coffee. Each four-tier stand serves two people by providing two pieces of everything on the menu. Each diner gets a glass of fruit juice and a choice of a pot of tea or two cups of Nespresso coffee.
Most of the items for high tea at Bar 1864 were small and bite-sized. The sandwiches, the quiche

Afternoon Tea v High Tea
Afternoon tea was traditionally for the upper class of Britain as the working classes were working during afternoon tea time. High tea was the evening meal of the working classes after work.
A possible explanation why the evening meal was called High Tea is the fact that it was eaten at a table. In comparison, Afternoon Tea was taken whilst seating in low, comfortable chairs or sofas.
