One Man Coffee Cafe at Upper Thomson – great coffee, limited food

One Man Coffee is a small cafe along Upper Thomson Road, near the junction with Sin Min Road. It has been there for quite some time now. We had heard good things about its coffee and so we went there for brunch recently.

The cafe space at One Man Coffee is really small. The decor looks quite dated but there was a nice vibe in the air. Probably because the staff were energetic and courteous. It was a weekday morning. Not the most busy time for many of the other restaurants along the row, but at OMC, there was a constant flow of customers. If only other eateries have these kind of personnel … and customers. The smallness of the place and the limited food options probably mean that the management and customer share the same interest – the fondness for coffee.

One Man Coffee Menu

Here is a picture of the One Man Coffee Menu. Food is listed on one page. Drinks are on the other. The types of drinks available are double that of the food! We decided on smashed avocado on sourdough ($13) and French toast ($15) with our coffee. The prices are nett (i.e. no more GST or service charge was added).

The cappuccino ($5 each) was very good and enjoyable. Quite strong in flavour but smooth and without any sourish after-taste. We like the artwork done on them. Although the pattern is quite a common one, it was well executed with clean sharp lines.

The Food

The avocado toast had toasted sliced almonds and feta cheese sprinkled over the smashed avocado. It was was good snack. It tasted even better when eaten with coffee. The amount of avocado spread over the bread was rather low. A more generous amount of avocado would have made it more delicious.

The French Toast was presented in an asymmetrical style. It was attractive in a modern art kind of way. Beneath the slices of banana and berries were two thick pieces of brioche with salted caramel sauce. We like the amount of fruits that were served with this dish. But do not like the very salty taste of the salted caramel. Overall, we thought that the taste of this dish was average.
