Micro red | house Katong

The Red House Katong

Katong Bakery & Confectionery was established in 1925 and became a popular breakfast place in the East referred to simply as the Red House Bakery. The bakery closed in 2003 because the iconic building with the red facade it was occupying was deemed unsafe. The Red House in Katong had been restored and was home to Heavenly Wang Cafe. Now it is a bakery and a nice breakfast place again. Micro red | house is a hip bakery cafe offering sourdough breads, small batch baked goods and good coffee.

Micro Bakery @ The Red House

Micro Bakery & Kitchen at Serene Centre is a small artisanal bakery known for its sourdough breads. Its breads are supplied to restaurants such as The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck and The Feather Blade. There is a nice piece in Business Times about Micro and Baker Jaslyn Chua.

Micro red | house is a new outpost with a much bigger space. It looks like the typical trendy independent cafes but is differentiated by the distinctive Katong nyonya elements. The interior is divided into a food preparation space and a long dining area. There is a small retail space near the entrance.

Bread & Cakes

Sourdough breads, as well as other variety of breads and cakes, are made fresh at the Katong bakery.

Trays of fresh bakes, with enticing aromas, are constantly being brought out from the oven to the display counters. That ritual certainly helps to give the bakery cafe a rustic charm and cosy atmosphere. The pictures below show some of the breads and cakes available at Micro red | house.

Menu of Micro red | house

The menu of Micro red | house is a fairly simple and limited one. It is essentially a sourdough sandwich menu with addons like, eggs, sausages and the new trendy cafe staple – avocados. Below are pictures of Micro red | house’s menu when we visited the bakery cafe recently.

Breakfast at Micro red | house

We had breakfast at Micro red | house recently. We ordered the micro club Sandwich (S14), a piece of lemon chia yoghurt cake, ($5) a latte ($5) and a cappuccino ($5).

Food plating is not a strong point of Micro. The proud bakers let their bread to the taking. The toated airy bread was very good. Otherwise, the club sandwich was rather ordinary.

lemon chia yoghurt cake & coffee at Micro

The lemon chia yoghurt cake did not look too exciting as well but the cake with sweet and tangy flavours was delicious. It had a nice texture, mosit and dense, and the slight tartness of the lemon brightened the taste of the cake. It was perfect with hot coffee in the morning.

Besides the sourdough bread, coffee was the next best thing at Micro red | house. The only small gripe would be that our cappuccino and latte came in rather small cups. You might need two cups if you are one of those who must be boosted by caffeine to get going in the morning.

Nice Breakfast Spot

Micro red | house is a nice new breakfast spot. Its sourdough breads are very good and we like their coffee. The place is cozy. We will certainly be buying bread from this bakery in The Red House in Katong and we will not be surprised if The Red House becomes a popular breakfast place in the East once again.
