Youtiao With Curry, Beancurd, Egg Tarts & Bolo Bao at Novena Square 2

“Eatin’ Around with No Plan” was the initial title for this post about the day we ended up eating youtiao with curry and soy beancurd at Novena Square 2, followed by egg tarts and char siew bolo bao from Tai Cheong.

We stopped by at Mr Youtiao at level 2 of Novena Square. When we first saw people eating youtiao with curry sometime ago, it felt a bit weird as it was strange combination. Since then we have tried it a few times and grew to like it. As we had not eaten this for a while, the dough sticks seemed to call out to us. We answered.

The Mr Youtiao outlet at Novena Square 2 opens everyday. There are some set combinations available. The curry is always available for the youtiao. We selected a Soy Youtiao Set ($5.20) and extra youtiao and coffee.

Eating Youtiao with Curry

These are pictures of our youtiao with curry snacks. The soybean drink and the soy beancurd were nice and smooth as expected. However, the almond youtiao that day were slightly diappointing as they were neither warm nor crisp.

Fortunately there was the curry to the rescue. The youtiao with curry combo reminded me of roti prata. In fact, if it was a blind tasting, it would be hard for me to taste the difference.

Tai Cheong at Novena Square 2

After the not-so-satisfying stopover at Mr Youtiao, we were pleasantly surprised to see that Tai Cheong has an outlet at Novena. Unlike the full service cafe at Tai Cheong Holland Village, this was a stall selling pastries for takeaway.

It was easy for us to decide what to buy at Tai Cheong. Our two favourite items : egg tart and char siew bolo bao ($2 and $2.80 each respectively). For more details about the egg tarts and other food served at Tai Cheong Holland V, you can read our previous post here.

The snacks from Tai Cheong were as we had expected. The bolo bao was rich and satisfying and egg tarts crumbly and smooth. Snacking around with no plan turned out to be more filling than expected. It is not advisable to do this on a regular basis, but fun to do once in a while.
