Unatoto Singapore @ Guoco Tower is the famous Japanese Unagi Restaurant’s first outlet in Singapore. Featuring charcoal-grilled eels, this new affordable unagi don outlet has been drawing crowds since it opened at Tanjong Pagar in January 2023.
How Long Is the Queue at Unatoto
Located at B1 of Guoco Tower, the new Unatoto Singapore enjoys a very good location, just steps away from the MRT Tanjong Pagar station exit within the same building. Singaporeans love their good unagi bowls, especially at affordable prices. Fortunately we arrived just before the weekday lunch crowd which start forming at around 11.30 am. We guesstimate that the queuing time would be around 45 minutes. From our experience it is best to avoid the peak period of 11.30am to 1.00pm on weekdays.
Once we got seated, the restaurant experience was good. The restaurant interior was comfortable. The ordering process was straightforward and the food started to arrive around 10 – 15 minutes after we sent the order via the online ordering system. Service was attentive and courteous.
Unatoto Singapore Menu
The menu is quite straightforward – unagi don permutations with different types and quantities of grilled eel and/or other food on a bowl of rice. There is also the option of selecting either the bowl only (a la carte) or as a set. The latter costs a bit more and comes with a soup and a side dish of cold tofu.
Here are some sample pictures from the online menu showing different undon and unajyu (made with the tail part of the eel).
Unatoto Menu Items With Less or No Eel
For those not keen on just eating just grilled eel for lunch, there are some combinations that have less eel content and one that has totally no eel – the Teriyaki Chicken Don ($8.50).
Unatoto Unadon Double
Unagi enthusiasts will no doubt focus on the pure unagi dons available. The basic unagi don ($9.50) has one slab of grilled eel. The unadon double has twice the amount of eel and costs $14.50. We figured the latter was better value for money and indeed that was the case. The two thick slabs of unagi were more than enough for one person. The sauce used was flavourful as was the rice. Overall we did not get the impression that this was a low cost version of unagi. It has been some time since we last tried unagi specialist restaurants in Singapore such as Uya Unagi so it is hard to make a direct comparison. Suffice to say that we think the Unatoto Singapore unagi is good enough for us if we get a craving for Japanese grilled eel.
Kabayaki and Tempura Don
Those who like unagi but would like to also eat unagi don with a difference can consider the Kabayaki and Tempura Don ($15). We believe kabayaki means the unagi is prepared slightly differently (but we could not really taste a difference). The unagi bowl has one slab of eel and a few tempura items which help to break the monotony of taste.
Unatoto Singapore Unagi Tempura Don
For those who are not very keen on unagi, the Unagi Tempura Don ($15) does not have any grilled eel. Instead there are a few pieces of eel cooked in tempura style as well as some seafood and vegetable items.
Non-Eel Item at Unatoto Singapore
Our friend who does not like unagi but decided to have lunch with us anyway was happy to see the Teriyaki Chicken Don ($8.50) on the menu. This was how it was presented as a set. The chicken teriyaki was actually quite good and provides a good alternative to unagi at Unatoto Singapore. Japanese tea costs $2 per person.
Side Dishes
Besides eel dishes, there are also some side dishes at Unatoto Singapore. We tried the rolled egg and chawanmushi. Both were good and we would certainly be happy to order them again.
