Space Coffee is an unexpected find in the unfashionable stretch of Geylang Road lined with old school eateries, small retailers and building materials and fixtures businesses. The new trendy cafe in Geylang stands out from its neighbours with its contemporary interior design and welcoming atmosphere.
Space Coffee in Geylang Road
Located in the stretch of Geylang Road between Lorong 29 and Lorong 31, Space Coffee is in a block of restored shophouses next to the heritage mosque Masjid Khadijah (built in 1920 and gazetted for conservation). The famous Geylang Lor 29 Charcoal Fried Hokkien Mee stall and Yong He Eating House are in that vicinity.
As you approach the cafe, you will notice its wooden framed glass door and large glass panels on the frontage, allowing ample natural daylight to flood the interior. The space inside has an open and airy feel.
The minimalist industrial interior design gives a touch of urban chic to the ambience. The simple furniture in warm tones and a few strategically placed big potted plants create a soothing and cozy environment.
Space Coffee occupies 2 shophouses and can seat about 40. There are little nooks and corners with different feels and atmospheres. Opt for tables at the rear if you want some seclusion. The tables in front allow a connection between the inside and outside.
The Menu of Space Coffee
Space Coffee has a simple food menu. There are a few all day breakfast items, like Avo on Toast and Berries Toast, as well as fusion dishes like Space Coffee Carrot Cake and Laksa Pasta. There are no pork dishes on the menu. Bakes and a fair selection of beverages are also available.
Below are pictures of a few pages of the digital menu.
Brunch at Space Coffee
We ordered the signature Space Coffee Carrot Cake ($15) and Scrambled Egg Brioche ($18) for brunch.
Space Coffee Carrot Cake is cafe standard Chai Tow Kueh. The pieces of radish cake were fried with eggs with a house-made sauce and adorned with a few succulent, large prawns. The radish cake had a soft interior, while the exterior had a delectable crispness. The dish had a nice blend of flavours. For those who appreciate a bit of spice, a side of spicy sambal was provided to add an extra kick. The dish was enjoyable but probably not more enjoyable than a $5 plate of chai tow kueh from your favourite carrot cake stall at the food centre.
The Scrambled Egg Brioche was a balanced combination of flavours and ingredients that left us feeling satisfied and nourished. The eggs were well cooked and had a moist and creamy texture. The brioche was soft and pillowy. Fresh greens and vibrant cherry tomatoes brought colours and freshness to the table. Baked potatoes and mushrooms added substance and depth of flavours to the dish.
Cake & Coffee at Space
We also had a latte ($6) and a piece of gluten free Almond Orange Cake ($6).
The gluten-free Almond Orange Cake was a nice treat that combined the zesty flavours of oranges with the nutty richness of almonds. This cake had a light and airy texture and an ideal crumb.
The barista made coffee was good rich, smooth and aromatic.
