88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist Lavender Road was the place we went for lunch recently. We enjoyed the char siew that is one of the best in Singapore. But were less enthusiastic about the siew yok and roast duck.
Best Roast Meat in Singapore?
Reputed to be one of the best roast meat places in Singapore, 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist has a strong following. There are three outlets in Singapore – Lavender Street, Tyrwhitt Road and China Square. Each one has a respectable 4.4 to 4.5 stars in Google review. I am surprised that it took us so long to try it.
88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist Lavender Street
The Lavender Street outlet of 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist takes up a whole coffee shop. There are several tables in the shop, with many more spread out along the pavement outside. We tried to avoid the lunch crowds by going on a weekday at around 11something in the morning. But we were not successful. The crowd was already there. The queue moves fast because the food service is quick. Unfortunately a couple of big customers (as char siew rice is a very convenient food for takeaways) meant we were in the queue for 20 mins.
Menu – What to Eat
Here are some pictures of the 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist Menu. The stars are the three roast meats – char siew, roast pork and roast duck. They can be ordered in a number of combinations as seen on the menu. Side dishes such as wanton soup and vegetables are available.
Our main dish for lunch was a large meat platter ($30) of the three kinds of meat. We supplemented that with rice, noodles, lava eggs ($1.80 each), nai bai vegetables ($5.50) and wanton soup ($5.50).
What to Eat at 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist Lavender
Now we will show you what we ate at 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist Lavender and what we think of each of them. The char siew was the best. At first the skin looks overly burnt. But that’s because they had been coated with a thick layer of dark, sweet marinade. The caramelised and smoky flavour made it stand out from the merely good char siew in Singapore. Even with all the charring outside, the inside of the pork remained tender and moist.
The roast pork was good mainly because of its skin. Crisp and light, this was the kind that will not break your teeth to hear the crackling sound. But we found it to be too fatty for us. Those who like their siew yoke with a wide band of fat will enjoy this more. The roast duck was not bad but did not stand out as much as the other meats.
We found the lava egg to be very good. Its gooey egg yolk was done just right like those we find in ramen. The nai bai vegetable was quite plain but it was necessary to balance the heaviness of the meat with some plants.
We thought that the wanton soup ($5.50) was good and also value for money. Char siew goes well with plain rice but even better with the noodles at 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist Lavender.
