The new Tempura Bar by Astons opens in SingPost Centre. It takes over the space previously occupied by Aji ichi of the Astons Group. The new Japanese restaurant offers tempura and other Japanese cuisine staple as well as affordable wines, sake and beer.
Tempura Bar by Astons
ASTONS is a homegrown food & beverage (F&B) group best known for its casual steakhouse serving affordable steaks and homely Western cuisine. The group has several outlets in SingPost Centre – Astons Specialities, Chic-A-Boo Chicken Specialty, and now the new Tempura Bar.
Aji Ichi Sushi Bar was the Astons Group’s Japanese outlet in SingPost Centre. The new Tempura Bar by Astons took over the space vacated by Aji Ichi. The new restaurant has a more spiffy look. The menu prices have also moved up a notch or two.
Menu of Tempura Bar
As you would expect, tempura and tendon would feature in the menu of the new restaurant. However, the menu also offers a good range of the usual Japanese dishes, including kakiage, udon and sashimi. Below are pictures of a few pages of the Tempura Bar’s menu.
A few screenshots of the digital menu used for placing order are below.
Sashimi & Vegetable Tendon
I stopped by the new restaurant when it had just opened. I ordered the Maguro Sashimi ($10.90) and the Vegetable Tendon ($13.90). The wait for the food was fairly short. The sashimi was served within 5 minutes and the tendon came about 10 minutes later.
The serving of the Maguro Sashimi was fairly generous – 5 thick slices. The presentation was good. The quality of the sashimi was average, perhaps comparable to the sashimi you might find at the Japanese station of a mid-range hotel restaurant buffet.
The Vegetable Tendon was the better dish. A bowl of rice topped with a variety of battered and deep-fried vegetables was served on a tray along with pickles and miso soup. The vegetable tempura included broccoli asparagus, long beans mushrooms and pumpkin. There was also an egg. The tempura had a light, crispy texture. On the whole it was an enjoyable tendon.
Nice Japanese Restaurant
The new Tempura Bar by Astons at SingPost Centre is a nice upgrade from the Aji Ichi Sushi Bar. It is a good attempt by the F&B group at moving up the value chain in Japanese dining. The casual dining Japanese restaurant in SingPost Centre serves good tempura at reasonable prices. It also has are other Japanese dishes and desserts as well a good range of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.
