Besides the more usual Penang dishes, the menu also offers zhi char dishes like salted egg prawn, deep-fried pork belly with shrimp paste and deep-fried fish with nyonya sauce. There is also a selection of one dish meals including nasi lemak, fried rice, nyonya fish with rice and hor fun. Below are pictures of a few pages of the rather extensive menu of Penang Savour in Marine Parade.
Lunch at Penang Savour
We visited Penang Savour in Marine Parade for lunch and ordered Baba Fish Rice ($7), Fried Kway Teow ($6.40), Laksa ($5.90) and Chendol ($3.80).
Baba Fish Rice was a one dish rice meal with a fried egg and fish fillet, onions and lady’s finger in a tangy assam sauce which was mildly spicy. It was a simple but appetising dish – an upgrade from the typical plate of economic rice we might get from the food court.
The Penang Fried Kway Teow did not disappoint. The small flat noodles stir-fried with crunchy bean sprouts, fresh prawns, slices of Chinese sausages and other ingredients had a nice smoky flavour. It was one of the better versions of Penang Fried Kway Teow we had tried in Singapore.
The star dish would be the Penang Assam Laksa. It was served piping hot topped with a myriad of ingredients. The spicy tangy broth was rich and packed with flavours. You would know that there were pieces of fish in the broth although they were so well absorbed and integrated. The noodles had a good springy bite. Everything combined well for a delightful bowl of Penang laksa.
Penang Chendol was a refreshing dessert. The green rice flour jelly was soft and smooth but had a slight chewiness. There was a balanced mix of coconut milk and gula melaka.
Beverages options at Penang Savour are not extensive. We could not get kopi so we had Chinese Tea ($1.60). The prices for the beverages are comparable to prices at the neighbourhood kopitiams.
