We recently tried a Chinese restaurant menu for a special occasion for two persons. Such events could be a simple birthday celebration, wedding anniversary or business promotion. The $128++ Abalone and Shark’s Fin Lunch Menu ticks all the boxes for an auspicious and delicious meal at Wah Lok restaurant, Singapore.
During the year-end period in Singapore, Western restaurants are packed for Christmas celebrations. We thought we would be contrarian and go East when others were heading West. Getting a reservation at a Chinese restaurant in Singapore was relatively easier.
Chinese Restaurant Menu for Special Occasion Lunch
Dining for two at Chinese restaurants can be a challenge. As most dishes are tailored for sharing in groups, ordering dishes from the a la carte menu meant being confined to about two or three dishes. Set menus will be useful but these are often designed for groups from 4 to 10 pax. Which was why we were happy to come across this $128++ Abalone & Shark’s Fin Chinese restaurant menu.
While the price of $128 per pax is not exactly cheap, we think it is reasonable considering what is available in the market these days. The menu includes prized food items such as sharks fin, abalone, cod fish, scallop and noodles. Some of these are also considered auspicious dishes suitable for some special occasions.
Scallop and Sharks Fin
Sautéed scallop with egg white in truffle oil was the first dish. It is a plain looking dish but the taste was very good. The scallop was fresh and cooked just right. The pale looking egg white tasted nice on its own, but became spectacular when some black vinegar was added.
We were curious about the vinegar and the staff kindly showed us the brand they were using. This Gold Plum brand vinegar has a good blend of sweetness to the tartness of vinegar. We used it when the mee pok arrived the end of the meal and it worked well with dry noodles as well.
Sharks fin dishes at Chinese restaurants can be very expensive, so we had low expectations for this dish – braised sharks fin with crab meat in carrot soup. The sharks fin content was low as expected, with just some slivers of it being detected. But the crab meat content was satisfactory with quite a few chucks of it being present in each bowl. The carrot provided additional sweetness to the taste, and more importantly, some red colour to enhance the feel of auspiciousness.
Baked Cod and Whole Abalone
Next to arrive were the baked cod (picture above) and braised whole abalone. We would have preferred the cod to have less seasoning to allow the natural fish flavours to shine more. The braised abalone was a good sized specimen and it is always a luxury to have a whole abalone to oneself.
Chinese Restaurant Menu for Special Occasion For 2 Persons – Noodles and Dessert
Noodles are an essential dish for a birthday celebration, which was why the Wah Lok Chinese Restaurant Menu for Special Occasion For 2 Persons is a useful one. The mee pok noodles with ling chi mushroom had a simple look but tasted great. Even better when black vinegar was added.
Lunch ended with a dessert of cream of pomelo and mango with sago.
Since most of the dishes were seafood, our wine for lunch was a bottle of white Burgundy – 2020 Olivier Leflaive Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Remilly.
