Sun Tung Lok Hong Kong (新同樂 Sun Tung Lok Chinese Cuisine) is a 2 Michelin Star restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. We wanted to try a good Chinese restaurant that we were not familiar with, but at a convenient location. This was the restaurant that looked suitable. An easy online reservation without the need to provide credit details provided an additional incentive to visit.
Former 3 Michelin Star Chinese Restaurant in Hong Kong
According to its website, Sun Tung Lok Chinese Cuisine was founded in 1969 by the Yuen’s family. In the past decades, they have focused on Guangdong cuisine and tailor-made customer services. In 2011, Sun Tung Lok Chinese Cuisine was awarded MICHELIN 3 Stars. Apparently, it was the first non-hotel eatery to be rewarded 3 stars in Hong Kong. From 2012 to 2023 they were awarded 2 Michelin Stars.
Sun Tung Lok Hong Kong is located in a shopping mall along the busy Nathan Road. It is an easy straight walk northwards from the Kowloon seafront. Which makes it an easy place for a dim sum lunch after visiting the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and its attractions such as the Space Museum and Avenue of Stars.
The decor is comfortable and laid back. It was a relief that it is not the glitzy place that we were half-expecting for a multi-starred restaurant with its impressive history. Service was friendly and we communicated adequately with the staff with our broken-Cantonese, interspersed with English.
Sun Tung Lok Restaurant Menu
The Sun Tung Lok Hong Kong menu offers a big range of options. A simple dim sum lunch is possible and if the budget permits, more extravagant choices are available. For instance, a Supreme Abalone Set Menu (For Two Persons) is available for HK$14,980.
For ordinary patrons who have yet to be lucky at Toto, we focused on the more reasonably priced options. Here are some pictures of sample pages of the restaurant menu.
Lunch at Sun Tung Lok Hong Kong
Dim Sum
We tried a couple of dim sum dishes – steamed rice flour rolls with char siew (HK$78) and baked barbecued pork puff (3 pcs, HK$84)
Compared to Singapore Chinese restaurant prices, Hong Kong dim sum seems more expensive. But at Sun Tung Lok Hong Kong, the portions were much larger. The rolls of cheong fun were twice as thick while the char siew soh were the size of curry puffs. Both were good, but the steamed rice flour rolls (picture above) were more special. The rice roll was thin and translucent, holding in a substantial amount of prawn stuffings.
Steamed Fish Dishes
We tried two steamed fish dishes: steamed garoupa filet with fried garlic and capers (HK$178) and steamed spotted garoupa fillet with black fish roe (HK$188)
Both steamed fish dishes were served in fillet form and in individual portions. The presentation was attractive and serving size was small. Most importantly, the taste was very good. Multiple ingredients in each dish gave it a unique and complex taste. We can see the basis of the two Michelin star award.
Sun Tung Lok Roast Pigeon
We tried a dish that is seldom found in Singapore – roast pigeon (HK$248). The roast pigeon was served whole in a “butterflied” form. This was another good discovery. The pigeon was large enough to be quite meaty. It certainly had a level of gaminess that, if present at a moderate level, makes small birds like pigeons and quail very tasty. This was the case at Sun Tung Lok. This is a place to go for pigeon on a future visit to Hong Kong.
