Long before Michelin stars shone on Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle, Singaporeans have been slurping down bowls of bak chor mee, a Teochew noodle dish that can be found all over Singapore. Seng Huat Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle, an old stall on North Bridge Road just opposite Bugis Junction, offers a comforting rendition of this classic all day & all night.
Seng Huat Coffee House
成发咖啡屋 Seng Huat Coffee House is a coffeeshop located at North Bridge Road. It had a make-over recently. It is brightly lit and has various food and drinks stalls, including the typical economic rice stall and a mala tang stall. The most popular stall there is the Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle or Bak Chor Mee stall.

The bak chor mee stall is right right in front of the coffeeshop. It is a self service stall. You queue to place your order and pay. Wait as the noodles are cooked to order. Be prepared to queue for a few minutes alongside the peckish office worker, curious tourist and the bleary-eyed reveller – a testament to Seng Huat’s democratic appeal. The prices have gone up over the years. But as at April 2024, a bowl of bak chor mee starts at the affordable price point of $4.50.
The menu board shows clearly the options available. Choose your noodles (mee kia, mee pok, bee hoon, yellow noodle, kway teow or mee sua) and decide between a dry or soup version. They will ask if you want chilli. You can also add chilli and vinegar yourself to suit personal taste.

We tried the Minced Meat Noodles ($4.50) with and the Abalone Noodle ($5.50).
The Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle was a bowl of springy noodles topped with fresh minced pork, pork slices, liver, crunchy anchovies, vinegar-braised mushrooms and fried pork lard. The chilli was not very spicy did add a sufficient kick. It was a simple dish elevated by the harmony of its parts. A good version of the Teochew bak chor mee.
The Abalone Noodle was essentially the Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle with two thin slices of abalone. It was also an enjoyable dish.
24 hour noodles stall in convenient location
Besides serving good bak chor mee, Seng Huat Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle also has fishball noodles and the specialty mee sua. It is in a convenient central city location and opens round the clock. For the visitors to Singapore, enjoying a bowl of Teochew noodles in Seng Huat Coffee House is experiencing a slice of Singaporean coffeeshop culture. The place is also a haven for those who are hungry late at night or early in the morning. Whether you are a seasoned bak chor mee connoisseur or a curious newcomer, Seng Huat is a worthy stop in the Bugis area for a comforting bowl of bak chor mee.
