Black Society 黑社会 is known for its modern Cantonese cuisine and its stylish interior. Over the years, it has operated in various locations, including Vivo City. The new Black Society Restaurant opened a few months ago in UBS Building. We recently enjoyed a dim sum lunch at Black Society on Penang Road.
Black Society Restaurant in UBS Building
The UBS Building on Penang Road is a 10-storey office building that is home to the private bank UBS Singapore. Before the UBS Building, the site was occupied by Park Mall, which was originally opened in 1971 as Supreme House.
The new Black Society Restaurant opened in the second half of 2024. It is situated on the ground floor of UBS Building, located near the end of the building opposite the Singapore Shopping Centre.
The restaurant’s exterior is striking, featuring a sleek black facade adorned with large, black orchid sculptures. The al fresco dining area offers a stylish and inviting atmosphere with its black and white tiled floor and a captivating hanging green garden.
The interior of Black Society has a modern Chinese aesthetic with a black and white colour scheme. Large, captivating black and white Chinese paintings adorn the walls. The restaurant features a variety of table sizes to accommodate different dining parties. For smaller groups, intimate tables are available, while larger gatherings can be comfortably seated at spacious round tables within semi-private booths, separated by ornate traditional Chinese wood and glass screens.
Menu of Black Society Restaurant
Black Society Restaurant offers modern Cantonese dishes with signature items such as Aromatic Crispy Duck, Mama Crab Noodle, Honey Grilled Spare Ribs, Frozen Kailan and Lobster Bisque Xiao Long Bao. Below are pictures of a few random pages of the main menu.
There is a separate dim sum menu.
Interestingly, Black Society also has a special menu for Meals for One.
Dim Sum at Black Society
During our dim sum lunch at Black Society in UBS Building, the first item we selected was the familiar Crispy Prawn Mango Salad Roll ($7.50). That aside, we decided to venture beyond our usual favourites and explore other interesting options – the Radish Pancake ($7), Crispy Pumpkin Yam Cake ($7) and Almond Cream Mangosteen ($7.50).
Crispy Prawn Mango Salad Roll
The Crispy Prawn Mango Salad Roll had a delightfully crisp pastry shell generously encrusted with sesame seeds. While the pastry’s texture and flavour were impressive, they somewhat overpowered the filling. The tangy taste of the mango was not as prominent as we had hoped. Although enjoyable, it was not the best rendition of this dim sum item we had tried.
Crispy Pumpkin Yam Cake
The Crispy Pumpkin Yam Cake was a definitely a surprise. Arriving as three intricately constructed cubes, it resembled more of a modern art piece than a food dish. Each cube were remarkably firm, making it challenging to break apart. While the presentation was impressive, it would be difficult to enjoy the dish while trying to be demure and graceful. We would not recommend this dish for a first date or a business lunch.
However, once we managed to separate the deep-fried pumpkin and yam sticks from the cube structure, we were well rewarded. They were delicious, reminding us of sweet potato fries but with a greater complexity of flavours.
Radish Pancake
The Radish Pancake was the most satisfying dim sum item of the day. Essentially it was “White Chye Tow Kueh” (also known as local carrot cake) presented in the form of a round pancake and topped with crunchy peanuts. It had a delightful crispy exterior with a soft and smooth radish cake interior. The combination of textures and flavours was very enjoyable. You can add chilli to enhance the dish according to your preference. It was a simple and good dim sum dish.
Almond Cream Mangosteen
The Almond Cream Mangosteen was a dessert featuring glutinous rice flour balls shaped and coloured to resemble mangosteens. These balls were filled with a rich and creamy Chinese almond cream. The exterior had a chewy, mochi-like texture, while the warm filling was slightly sweet with a subtle nutty flavour. It was an enjoyable dessert.
Impressive Space & Extensive Menu
Our visit to Black Society Restaurant in UBS Building on Penang Road for a dim sum lunch was overall a pleasant experience. The restaurant’s space is impressive and comfortable. The extensive menu offers a wide variety of options, catering to both large groups and solo diners. There is a good mix of classic dishes and innovative creations. The dim sum items we tried were enjoyable. We would happily return to Black Society Restaurant for another meal in the future. We might even try the Crispy Pumpkin Yam Cake again, if we don’t have to be demure and mindful during the meal.
