Baba Chews Set Lunch – great value Nyonya meal

Baba Chews is the all-day dining restaurant at Hotel Indigo in Katong Square. It now offers a mix of modern Asian and Western dishes alongside specialty coffee and fine teas. Currently, it has a good value set lunch that will bring smiles to those looking for a simple, good Nyonya meal in the East.

The restaurant occupies a charming beautiful space, set in the former Joo Chiat Police station. The décor combines white walls with black trimmings and patterned tiles. Stepping inside feels like entering an elegant Eurasian home, complete with a stylish bar and cosy nooks perfect for afternoon tea.

The menu of Baba Chews features contemporary Asian dishes like the Nikkei-inspired Grilled Assam Halibut and Singapore Chili Crab Risotto. Western classics like Fish and Chips and Ribeye Steak are also on the menu. There are also interesting desserts like churros and durian mousse.

Baba Chews Set Lunch

Baba Chews currently has a special set lunch promotion on weekdays, from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. For just $14.90 for one person or $24.90 for two, diners can enjoy a platter of Nyonya delights.

We chose the set for two. The set lunch began with a hot soup of the day. The sharing platter included Blue Pea Steamed Jasmine Rice, Ayam Buah Keluak, Chap Chye, and Beef Cheek Rendang, accompanied by Nyonya Achar. We also had the option to choose a local drink. The portion size was not large but was sufficient for those with an average appetite.

Highlights of the Meal

The Beef Cheek Rendang was a standout dish. Tender pieces of beef were slow-cooked in a rich coconut gravy, infused with turmeric and spices. The aroma was inviting, and the taste was simply delicious.

We also liked the Ayam Buah Keluak, which featured grilled chicken breast served with the unique buah keluak (black nut) jus. The sauce was a delightful blend of sweet and tangy, pairing perfectly with the steamed rice. This traditional Peranakan dish provided a complex and layered taste experience, making it enjoyable in many ways.

The Chap Chye was also good. This well-braised mixed vegetable dish was packed with flavour.

Great Value Meal

For such a good quality meal in a pleasant setting, the price of the set lunch for two is very reasonable. Even if you are dining alone, you will still enjoy a great value meal. The Baba Chews Set Lunch Special provides a wonderful opportunity to savour delicious Nyonya food in Katong.
