What do you get when you cross Shake Shack burger with KEK Seafood zi char classic flavours? Answer : a “keeping it local menu” which features Shake Shack burgers with a uniquely Singaporean twist, incorporating some well-known Zi Char flavors. This collaboration between SS and KEK Seafood started from 17 October 2024 at all Shacks in Singapore and will run for a limited time.
Shake Shack Westgate
Shake Shack Westgate is quite a big outlet. At peak hours it can get very crowded (eg weekday lunch and weekend mealtimes). But on a weekday that is not mealtime, it is a place of peace and tranquility. That was when we decided to go try the Shake Shack KEK burger.
Keeping It Local at Shake Shack
According to the SS website, they have teamed up with Michelin-selected hawker pioneers KEK Seafood and Tobyato to show their appreciation to Singapore. The items created out of this collaboration are the coffee glazed chicken bites ($9.10), coffee glazed chicken burger ($11.80), white pepper burger, white pepper fries and Buah Long Long Lemonade. KEK Seafood or Keng Eng Kee is of course a famous tze char restaurant with their main restaurant at KEK Bukit Merah and outlets at Tampines SAFRA and Punggol SAFRA. One of our favourite items at KEK is the coffee pork ribs.
Shack Shake KEK coffee glazed chicken burger
On this visit we only tried the Shack Shake KEK coffee glazed chicken burger and the buah long long drink. First impression of the burger was good. The colour and the sesame seeds do look like the real thing and bring to mind the famous KEK coffee pork ribs (see our file picture below).
Here is a closer look, There was a choice of chicken breast or thigh for this burger. We chose the latter. The sweetish sauce had the familiar KEK taste. But the texture of pork ribs could not be replicated by chicken. But I think that is probably as close as one can get. This was a good collaboration between Shack Shake and Keng Eng Kee. Nice for a change, but we will return to the regular burgers on our next visit.
As for the buah long long drink, we thought it was not as enjoyable as the burger. It was a very sweet drink, combined with the taste of ‘sng buay’. Probably more suited for those with a sweet tooth. By the way, buah long long is from the Spondias dulcis plant which produces a fruit that is crunchy and a little sour. Apparently it is called kedondong in Indonesia and balonglong in Singapore (Wikipedia).
